John Lennon paid a lot of money to advertise the idea of peace across the world. Did it make a difference, or was it just thrown away money? Do you think such a campaign would work now? What is the best way in your opinion to promote peace?

I guess it could be said that it was a waste of money. But I do commend John Lennon for trying. He wanted to give a message to the public about peace. Yes, maybe it fell to deaf ears, but he still chose to take his stand. Somehow I don't think he saw it as a waste of money, because he still let his feelings be known even if it didn't seem to do much good.

Perhaps an investment in clean water and education for third world nations would have been money better spent. John Lennon could have easily set up schools and wells in such places with has massive wealth. Ultimately, war comes about in many places because the people are angry about poverty. To make some silly statement like, "War is bad. Peace is good because people won't die or get maimed." is ignoring the root cause of war. Nonetheless, I can understand why John Lennon would have set up such ads, but he should have done more deep thinking on the matter.

I think his campaign would have been a lot more successful if he had gone about it without Yoko. Her and her influence made them look like a flaky joke. Artsy isn't the best route to take when tackling something as big as world peace. It won't even get you more than a handful of finger snappers in a New York City club.

I guess in one way you could say that at least he tried to make a difference. Not many artists these days would do something like that.

Even so, I have to agree with others on here and say that maybe his time and money would have been better spent, going down another route. While I'm sure as an artist he got a lot of respect and people listened to what he had to say, I think world peace might have been slightly out of his reach.

I think John Lennon was one of the greatest visionaries of the twentieth century.I still choke up when I remember the way he died, for me an example of the positive and the negative meeting in such a tragic and brutal way.All sane people want unity and world peace. The man is dead but the dream lives on.

Peace can be seen as hippy and unrealistic, but I like to see humanity strive for it. Clearly there are sectors of humanity that don't want peace and thrive on disharmony. Therefore as a concept I agree one should aim for it, but the reality is that there is a minority in society that don't want it as while they exist and persist, peace will not be achieved unless you round them all up and lock them up for life.

I've seen "Imagine" described as the "communist manifesto put to music." He had a message all right...

I do agree that peace is a serious issue and should be promoted in a serious fashion, but at the same time the simplistic idea, this utopian "world peace," is only something we can imagine. It just isn't possible.

It would be a good thing if more of the world dictators could be arrested and put on trial I'm sure.Seems to me that there's a lot to be said for hippy idealism.Just listen to some of those hippy anthems e.g.Sanfrancisco/Scot McKenzie and feel those goosebumps and get high on good vibrations!❤

World peace is a beautiful ideal, but one that we will only realize when Jesus returns. Jesus said that until the day of His coming, there will be “wars and rumors of wars” and that “nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom” and so far he’s been right “go figure” There has never been a time in the history of the world that somewhere, someone wasn’t fighting with someone else. Whether it was a world war involving dozens of nations or a local skirmish involving tribes or clans, men have always been at war with one another.

I believe that as Christians we should promote peace instead of conflict, remembering that by our own actions, complete peace will never be achieved.. sad.. But John lennon was pretty cool..

Will never happen as long as there is a military industrial complex, and cowards like Cheney, Rove, Bush, etc., running the country, and other cowards like Trump who refuse to fight when called, and then say they "love war", and threatening others with war.
