They wanted someone so far to the right that even when they were forced toward the center they would still be radical. The problem is that such a candidate would be unelectable in November.

They would have been much better off with Gary Johnson or John Huntsman, in my opinion.

And Romney, if he does follow a conservative line, will be doing to the U.S. what the conservative leaders in Europe have done to their own economies. The only reason we are better off than Europe is that we have decided to spend rather than institute austerity measures.
