That's ludicrous.
What if I don't want a dime of my money going to defense. (hypothetically)They tax me and others adamantly opposed to this expense and redistribute our wealth to a program full of rampant cost abuses... put it there anyway against my will. Because it's established as important to all... that's a socialist program.
And there is a whole lot of Corporate Welfare. And if you took the tax on Corporations away they wouldn't cut prices they'd simply look at that as a new windfall and take more profits.
Furthermore we've already been through this 100% Capitalism crap with the Robber Barrons. Also had a run at it with the produce companies and the absolutely positively horrendous & deadly ways truck drivers were treated by their monopoly on business which led to the creation of the Teamsters Union.
There has to be a mix of private business & government programs. There has to be the safety nets in society that private business would never provide.
Respectfully, you couldn't be more wrong. When this country was created the Republic of States decided that a single military would allow for greater protection. The formation of this military has nothing to do with a Social Program. Again, social programs are when individuals are taxed and the monetary equivalent is given to other persons. The military is given to everyone equally. You and I are provided the same protection. Building roads is not a social program because it provides rodes for all of us. Food Stamps is money out of my pocket that goes directly to other families. I am provided no benefit by this plan. That is the difference. (By the way, I'm in no way criticizing Food Stamps)
On your depiction of corporation, again your being skewed by an early 1900's view of corporations. What you describe as robber barons was primarily created by monopolies and a lack of certain government regulation. Teddy Roosevelt in particular beat down most of that with his trust busting. You are right, the unions did a very good job of finishing off the cruel and despicable treatment of labor in the early 20th century, but then they became the robber barons themselves. They demanded fees and provided less and less to their members while increasing their own infrastructure and power.
Have you ever owned your own company? Most companies are small and the entrepreneurs are the ones creating 70% of the new jobs. Companies are not people. They are not greedy and they do not hoard money. When things cost more, they charge more. When things cost less, there is more competition and prices are driven down. The one thing you and I will agree on is that there is less and less competition which is creating more risk of monopoly style industries. This is because of the current economy and the current Congress doesn't get how to stimulate job growth and how to open up borrowing for small business.
