Melamine is banned as a food additive. It is an industrial chemical that is used to make a whole variety of products - like Formica (see What is melamine?.

The Chinese have been putting in food illegally - its danger to humans has been well documented. In laboratory tests melamine looks like a organic protein - so food manufacturers can make the false and deadly claim that their product is high in protein.

To put an outright ban on melamine is to ban a perfectly good industrial chemical... we just need the Chinese to obey the law.

True enough. I wonder how many of them would obey the law? Using "Melamine" has been part of their system.
