COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The botched execution of an Oklahoma inmate is certain to fire up the debate over what constitutes cruel and unusual punishment — the phrase written into the U.S. Constitution and defined by the courts, piece by piece, over two centuries.

Convicted killer Clayton Lockett, 38, began writhing, clenching his teeth and straining to lift his head off the pillow Tuesday evening after he had supposedly been rendered unconscious by the first of three drugs in the state's new lethal injection combination.

The execution was halted, and Lockett died of an apparent heart attack 10 minutes later, authorities said.

While officials later blamed a collapsed vein — not the drugs themselves — the case is raising questions about the ability of states to administer lethal injections that meet the Eighth Amendment requirement that punishments be neither cruel nor unusual.
Death penalty opponents such as the American Civil Liberties Union called for a moratorium on capital punishment. And the White House said the procedure fell short of humane standards.

Pay for the bullet, and I guarantee his death will be quick and merciful.

How is it that thousands of dogs and cats are "put to sleep" as we like to put it all the time, and there never seems to be such a problem?

Let's get the local vet to administer the lethal injections.

Dog its cheaper get a rope then pull the level and door opens and you drop and hang 1 hour later pull him up and hes dead.

Actually its harder than you might guess. But mainly it can be cruel if you get the math wrong. A .45 works like a charm every time.

Imagine you stand waiting to be hanged then the executioner puts rope around your neck and ask you for your last words. And you say your last words and then he puts a black hood over your head you gotta be really scared for 10 minutes during the process. Thats the cruelty the killer faces. Nobody should have a peaceful execution when his victims didnt die a peaceful death.

Amend the constitution then.

Lockett resisted on the way to the chamber and was tased. Apparently the tasing either made it difficult getting a vein or maintaining a vein.

This was the cause of the "botched" execution. It took Lockett an hour to finally die of heart failure.

Lockett deserved every agonizing minute in my opinion. He was a rapist and a murderer who made his 19 year old white female victim watch as they dug her grave. He then shot her once, not killing her. The gun jammed and then he cleared the weapon, shot her again, still not killing her and then buried her alive.

A botched execution for a botched execution.

Karma is a bitch!
