It seems, from what little I know, that our Nation doesn't have sufficient laws and checks on campaign funding.

It appears possible for another country to fund a candidate in such proportions so as to overwhelm our airwaves, emails, phonelines, mail with lies, mistruths and rhetoric.

Does anyone have information or insight to add to this? Could it be done? Do we need laws changed in order to protect the Citizens?

This is a quote from a government web site. Of course, illegality doesn't mean foreigners will not pay attention to it.

http://www.fec.gov/pages/brochures/foreign.shtml

The Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) prohibits any foreign national from contributing, donating or spending funds in connection with any federal, state, or local election in the United States, either directly or indirectly. It is also unlawful to help foreign nationals violate that ban or to solicit, receive or accept contributions or donations from them. Persons who knowingly and willfully engage in these activities may be subject to fines and/or imprisonment.

The following groups and individuals are considered "foreign nationals" and are, therefore, subject to the prohibition:
Foreign governments;
Foreign political parties;
Foreign corporations;
Foreign associations;
Foreign partnerships;
Individuals with foreign citizenship; and
Immigrants who do not have a "green card."

Another country wants to buy our President?

How much do you think we can get for Bush?

For Sale - 1 Barely used President. Cheney did all the heavy lifting. Comes with no morals, no plan, no judgement and no clue so, you can simply install your own. Follows orders like a good boy scout. Bidders from non-english speaking countries welcome as he is presently a non-english speaker as well. Proven record in: avoiding serving in wars, creating senseless wars as a non-combatant, profiteering, crony support and economic stimulus packages. Requires training or lacks experience in: campaign support, earning concensus at the UN, world history, finding Osama Bin Laden, strategic planning, mission management and the Powell Doctrine. May be suitable for positions requiring the following: wearing a suit, showing up, particulary smug facial expressions, laughing at ones own jokes and in countries with a struggling stand-up comedian population. Any reaasonable offer considered, available January 20, 2009 or immediately which ever you prefer. NO refunds, NO warranties and NO RETURNS ACCEPTED!

This was a serious question though.

There have been reports of people donating money and not proving who they are or where they live. This concerns me.
