Looks like the first order of business for the PopStar is to erase the one serious blemish of JFK's short tenure and invade Cuba to grab the spoils.

"The government announced there may be more than 20bn barrels of recoverable oil in offshore fields in Cuba's share of the Gulf of Mexico, more than twice the previous estimate.

If confirmed, it puts Cuba's reserves on par with those of the US and into the world's top 20. Drilling is expected to start next year by Cuba's state oil company Cubapetroleo, or Cupet.

"It would change their whole equation. The government would have more money and no longer be dependent on foreign oil," said Kirby Jones, founder of the Washington-based US-Cuba Trade Association. "It could join the club of oil exporting nations."

"We have more data. I'm almost certain that if they ask for all the data we have, (their estimate) is going to grow considerably," said Cupet's exploration manager, Rafael Tenreyro Perez.

Havana based its dramatically higher estimate mainly on comparisons with oil output from similar geological structures off the coasts of Mexico and the US. Cuba's undersea geology was "very similar" to Mexico's giant Cantarell oil field in the Bay of Campeche, said Tenreyro.

A consortium of companies led by Spain's Repsol had tested wells and were expected to begin drilling the first production well in mid-2009, and possibly several more later in the year, he said...."

Great! Next maybe they can put food on the grocery store shelves, buy medicine for the people, and get some cars less than fifty years old. :D

Maybe now we can drill offshore?

Forget Cuba. It is a dirt-poor communist nation with nothing to offer. The Clinton mob, however, saw a goldmine when another dirt-poor nation was hit by an earthquake. The Clinton crime syndicate sprang into action and mined billions in profits from aid money thefts and scams in just a matter of months before clearing out with the cash and leaving Haiti worse off than before.

Cuba has few drilling projects and has to import almost all of the petroleum that it uses. All we see in this report is that some oil company thinks it has located offshore oil deposits. There are no operating wells producing in these locations.

Cuba's government is likely not competent of operating any major oil production. They have a shortage of table salt, in an island country surrounded by a salty ocean. They have to import toilet paper and menstrual pads. Paper products can be manufactured from resources that Cuba has, but the government is corrupt and incompetent.

Actually, the US government and people have NO drilling rigs, all oil production belongs to private companies that have no real allegiance to our country.

Cuba imports nearly all the petroleum products it consumes.
