Recent EU Treaties have introduced a lot more transparency as regards EU competences in matters affecting EU citizens and consumers. Despite the fact that it may not be perfect, a step forward has taken place.

However, Member States can still try to force their own rules in many sectors within the Single Market – look at the difference in gambling laws across the EU. MS still make people bet through monopolised state owned companies instead of allowing them to use any company they wish regardless the MS where the company is based so as to ensure that every EU citizen has the same right.
