Terrible news, a shooting this morning at Virginia Tech University.

Police say there were two separate shooting incidents - at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a student dormitory, and Norris Hall, an engineering building.

Police say they believe there was one gunman and that he is dead.

After the deadliest shooting at a US school, President George W Bush said the US was "shocked and saddened".

"Schools should be places of safety and sanctuary and learning. When that sanctuary is violated, the impact is felt in every American classroom and every American community," he added.

(CNN) -- A lone gunman is dead after officials said he killed at least 31 people Monday during shootings in a dorm and a building housing classrooms at Virginia Tech, making it the deadliest school attack in U.S. history.

Officials said the shooting incidents occurred two hours apart.

Attorney General Bob McDonnell confirmed the death toll and said, "That's the best information that I've got from the law enforcement officers who are on the scene."

It was not clear if the gunman was killed by police or if he took his own life.

It makes me realize how thankful I am that I could go to school today in safety and could return home safely.

30 Iraqis die on a daily basis and that is but a ticker on the bottom of cable news... yet this story will be running for the next several weeks in local newspapers... we already have the local college police force talking about increased security on campus... like you could stop a single individual who decided to go on a killing spree... this incident only serves to distract the American public from the real issues that are plaqueing this country... it's too bad he had to be an asian kid, if he were white it might actually make people try to understand what could have driven him to do this... like the Columbine kids who were slammed into lockers and punched in the back on a daily basis while being called fags... yet no teachers did anything because the kids doing it were the popular kids who were the sons and daughters of the great locals working at Lockheed Martin making ballistic missiles to "protect" their country... our values are quite skewed in this country and the extent to which we cover this event over the next few weeks only serves to validate this fact... sounds like the perfect excuse for college campuses to get increased funding for "security" from the Federal Government-which in the end will only restrict free speech in the places where it should be heard the most and lead us deeper and deeper down the path to becoming an absolute police state. More college kids are killed by police every year than by frustrated peers... yet the coverage of each of these deaths is pushed away-out of sight, out of mind right? Just like our elderly. Blame the lack of morals on the "liberals" though, right? Not like selling this country out to corporations has anything to do with our loss of values. Going to vomit now. Peace.

This incident represents the inherent problem with "gun-free zones".

They are happy hunting grounds for anyone who wants to commit mass murder without having the targets shoot back.

And to think that last year VA Tech suspended a student for carrying a concealed weapon (for which he had a permit) to class. If only he had been there on Monday....
