Small town, small school district in a mostly conservative town. Local opinions are very mixed. What do you think?

Yes, it does rather inexplicably.

"Shall not be infringed"? Then what of the other part of the Second which requires there to be a militia? What of all the people the right wing supports as not allowed to own guns e.g felons?

"The right of the people to keep and bear...arms shall not be infringed. A well regulated militia, composed of the body of the people, trained to arms, is the best and most natural defense of a free country...." (James Madison, I Annals of Congress 434 [June 8, 1789])

the rapidly expanding militias should remind the govt why weapons are not to be infringed

Don't forget that all important comma:

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

The first phrase justifies the second phrase. It doesn't say "the right of a militia to keep and bear arms." It clearly says "the right of the people to keep and bear arms."

It's odd that people attempt to rewrite this simply because they don't like it.
Freedom isn't free and if we don't remind pols it's the 2nd that insures they don't get to be tyrants then we risk needing to demonstrate it.

They know this and that's why they dislike "assault" rifles most of all.
