JOHANNESBURG (AP) -- Oprah Winfrey acknowledged in a newspaper interview published Saturday that she has made several mistakes at her elite South African school, but said she remains proud of its success.

The recent expulsion of four girls and suspension of three others was the second scandal to hit the Leadership Academy for Girls, which opened in 2007 to groom bright children from deprived backgrounds for a brilliant career. A dorm matron is currently on trial accused of abuse and sexual assault.

"I have made several mistakes and one of them was being overprotective of the girls, which has led to an impression that the school is isolating them from society," Winfrey was quoted as saying in the Weekend Argus.

She said she had also underestimated the extent of homesickness among girls at the boarding school.

Last month, four students were expelled and three others suspended. South African media at the time said they were accused of trying to force students into relationships and to engage in sexual contact.

Winfrey herself hasn't given details of the misconduct. But she said in the newspaper interview that it was "insulting" that the family of one of the expelled girls had complained to the press even though she had been warned before about her behavior.

"Those girls in their own testimony during the (disciplinary) hearing said they knew they were breaking the rules and that they deliberately broke the rules," the talk show queen was quoted as saying.

The institution just outside Johannesburg opened with a blaze of publicity in January 2007 with about 150 girls in 7th and 8th grades. The Academy is expected to grow by one grade each year until it reaches full capacity in 2011, with approximately 450 girls in grades 7 through 12.

Winfrey poured $40 million into the 28-building campus, which is spread across 22 lush acres. It has computer and science labs, a library, theater and wellness center, all protected by strict privacy. Each girl lives in a two-bedroom suite — a far cry from their humble surroundings at home.

I've often wondered about the; 'WHY factor'...why spend millions on one palatial compound...why subject the 'selected girls' to a boarding school style of educational system...why not spend that money on a thousand different locations...why not allow young boys to benefit from those same said schools at those 1,000 different locations...why not teach 20,000 boys & girls instead of the maximum capacity of 450 girls: why not, why not!!!

Is it just me or was Oprah building her own monument marker for historical record {was she being more narcissistic} than a benefactor for the underprivileged in Africa? Surely, I'm not the only cynical, suspicious person around here...LOL :(

........Its easy to critise and I agree to some extent that this "legacy" issue can be a problem. Africa is a basket case and rarely is it made easier with celebs pitching up thinking they can solve all the problems with a cheque book and a cute idea; sometimes it works sometimes its its a monumental screwup. Their hearts though are in the right place but......... wrong application of the right idea?

I never liked her show or her but I really really dont like her now. I dont think she does anything for the right reasons, I think its more about personal power and personal gain.

I used to think that she was 'a real deal' that her interview process was original and her forthright demeanor was genuine...and then she lied many times while doing those 'look at me & how skinny I've become' segments...she was a pill popping, starvation diet, junky and what she was saying publicly and on her show was a LIE.

My obese neighbor, stay at home mother, followed her every suggestion, her every doctors interview about some new diet like she was the 'Moses of the successful diet world', she fretted & stewed, anguished over the fact that Oprah was disappearing right before her eyes while she was only losing a pound or two every week...after 5 years of back sliding {weight yo-yo's} and painful humiliation she got the stomach band implanted...but WHOO WEEE MOMMA is she ever pissed at Oprah for the years of lying to the viewers.

I've suggested that she contact the show via: email, phone call, letter and explain your pain and see if she has the fortitude to ask you to be on the show!!! Well, its been 3 years now and nothing.

If Oprah was to interview herself and be as candid/soul searching honest as she has been with other guests...don't you think that she would lay some hard questions out on the table and ask for honest answers???

Oh I did not know she lied about her diets, that’s horrible to do that, your neighbor band sounds dangerous but I suppose it worked out for her.

Once Oprah had Barbara Walters on her show and attacked her and treated her like garbage calling her a kept woman because of an affair she had with a married man, Oprah insisted if you are in an affair with a married man that makes you a kept woman.

Barbara Walters looked at her puzzled, she didn’t understand why Oprah was grandstanding and reminded Oprah that she herself had had an affair with a married man and asked her if that did not also make her a kept woman, Oprah had a cow, I mean she got really upset and insulted that Barbara Walters would suggest that Oprah was a kept woman and snapped back that she had never been anyone’s kept woman.

She is a hypocrite in a million ways this is just one that comes to mind. She has always made me sick. Her constant push for "the one" only made me more disgusted with her.

Oh, man I missed that snafu with Barbara Walters...OMG...she {Oprah} has become a brazen hussy!!!

Did you see the one with Bill Gates {Microsoft King} back when he was just listed as the richest American and the top of the fortune 500 companies...she pinned his ears back by asking him why with all of his Billions that he didn't do more to help the impoverished children of America...{she was just getting her 'Angel Network Charity' off of the ground and was more or less asking for donations from him...Bill explained how he was placing computers into all of the American schools and upgrading the systems that the high schools had been using for years that were antiquated...he went on to explain that his educational foundation was established to be self-supportive in case he was no longer alive!!! OMG...that shut her up and she was sitting there gobsmacked and then cut to a commercial...when they came back she seemed pretty pissy and was definitely cool towards him. I'm sure that someone on her staff got a royal arse chewing if not fired for allowing her to be so publicly ***** slapped by a guest!!!

She has a web sight that she posted about her 'lies about her major weight loss' and she had it in her magazine...someone was going to 'out her' {last fall} and she raced to get her words printed up before the MSNBC morning show talked about it. Man, I bet she shed a few thousand crocodile tears about that!!!

Nah I did not see it, I cant stand her or her show so I never watch it. It was in anther show I saw the clip of her treating B walters so badly. So I went back and watched the whole interview and she was a total hypocrate. I really dont know how anyone can watch her show or buy books because she thinks they are good. Though I do admit liking the movie, the color purple.

That's a lot of money to spend on something that may not even be worth it. Where is the follow through? Who's making sure all of her plans are executed properly?
