kenya could it be another rwanda

Michael from Kenya has sent me the latest update.
" just want to give you the latest Kenyan political scene. There is a vey distinct prospect of having a president and vice president who are both on the ICC (IInternational Court) roster facing cases of crimes against humanity. Our next election in March next year and Messrs Uhuru and William Rutto appear to be the front runners by virtute of the fact they command large tribes and thus able to marshal rheir respective tribes to vote for them. The two gentlemen are accused of having masterminded the 2008 post election violence which witnessed untold mayhem being visited on other tribes. Interestingly in 2008 they were on opposite sides of the political divide but the ICC debacle seems to have glued them together in what most people term " afellowship of the accussed" Thetwo gentlmen have the financial muscle and charisma to persuade their tribes to vote for the en masse.
So there are intersesting times ahead but we dont know as yer the ramifications of having such people holding the highest office inthe country. eivable that any leader would want to associate with an ICC suspect. Thwill definately effect Kenya's relations with the West and especially our development partners because it is inconceivable that any leader would want to associate with an ICC suspect. The two have thrown caution to the wind and are gunning for the top positions with all their might with the calculations that once they are confirmed as president and vice president, these two positions would shield them from the Icc. Well we are waiting to see as eveents unfold.

Kenya better hope it has enough oil for the US to want to help its people

The Rwandans didn't which allowed the US to feel comfortable standing aside while genocide took place

Funny isn't it how you only warrant intervention if you have oil

According to Australian Media reports on Kenya, the son of the previous president and his vice president ,have been allowed to take part in the coming elections despite a UN charge against them.

Tribal loyalties still seem strong in Kenya and may determine the March elections

according to reports here, Kenyatta , the candidate who was on UN charges, narrowly won the Kenya elections. This is not the result Michael wanted. I hope he is OK.

I just received the Following E mAil from Michael in Kenya.
"You must been keeping abrest with the goings on here during the elections. The worst fears of the western world were confirmed with Uhuru Kenyatta winning the elections. Although Raila petitioned the supreme court decided to confirm Uhuru's win. Well,we have interesting times ahead and we wait keenly to see how the two ICC indictees lead the country. It will need a fine balancing act but let's see how it goes.
After the election about half of the country rejoicing vut half mourning. Though there is calm it is not peace because the country is split down the middle and tribalism deeply ingrained. The president and his vice won by virtue of what some pundits termed as the tyranny of numbers. The two come from populous communities and they manage to convince their tribes that they were victims of the ICC> The positive thing about the elections is that this time around the country didn't degenerate into war and bloodshed."

We are lucky we live in developed democracies where tribalism does not work or do we?
