The two-state solution may have been materialised informally with the UN vote but Palestine cannot expect to win more concessions from Israel especially on the West Bank settlements and the bid was successful because the PA distanced itself from Hamas to meet the criteria of 'peace-loving' and it was impossible when Arafat was in charge.

isnt this akin to Lincoln freeing slaves only in areas no longer under US control (formally referred to as the Emancipation Proclaimation) ?

its less substancial than a hologram.

Nothing is really going to change -- its mostly a symbolic thing. The part that matters, and would grant them UN membership and real state recognition has to be done through the Security Council -- which is never going to allow it.

The Majority of nations in the General Assembly supported it. Only nine were oppose. Only The USA would vote against it in the Security Council

Hence it would fail. There were also 41 abstentions.

Most of those who abstain like Australia would support the resolution next time. Of the permanent members of the Security Council voted for the resolution. France, Russia and China voted for the resolution. Britain abstain

Dogtower, The Un might carry not authority to you and Conservative Americans but it carries a lot of authority to most of the world. All wars since WW2 except Iraq have been conducted under UN mandate., There are UN peacekeeping forces in many countries. Aid to the poor and sick has been conducted mainly through the UN.

their "peacekeepers" rape and worse or they are too drunk to be of any use at all.

the fraud and graft associated with its aid is legendary.

Dogtower , Most of theses charges could be made for other armies and governments, In reality Israel is now alone. Even the USA condemns its plan to build more settlements.

quite possibly so. reason enough to avoid wide praise for what you would condem elsewhere.
with BO in the oval office Isrsel is now alone but Israel will do what it sees fit as pertains their interests.

would that the appeasing left were as ardent in their rage against the real barbery in the world.

Dogtower If you do not face reality, the swing of power to Palestine, You will lose. It is not a left wing issue. Left wing governments in the past opposed barbery in Indo China, the Congo , South America, and various parts of Asia. But we learn to live withe reality. That something the Conservatives seem unable to do

the reality is that nothing changes within Israel unless Israel wants it.
the UN has no authority to change this paradighm (probably spelled wrong no spell check on phone)
