WASHINGTON (AP) - Republican Sen. John McCain served on the advisory board to the U.S. chapter of an international group linked to ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America in the 1980s.

The U.S. Council for World Freedom also aided rebels trying to overthrow the leftist government of Nicaragua. That landed the group in the middle of the Iran-Contra affair and in legal trouble with the Internal Revenue Service, which revoked the charitable organization's tax exemption.

The council created by retired Army Maj. Gen. John Singlaub was the U.S. chapter of the World Anti-Communist League, an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators and ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. After setting up the U.S. council, Singlaub served as the international league's chairman.

McCain's tie to Singlaub's council is undergoing renewed scrutiny after his presidential campaign criticized Barack Obama for his link to William Ayers, a former radical who engaged in violent acts 40 years ago. Over the weekend, Democratic operative Paul Begala said on ABC's "This Week" that this "guilt by association" tactic could backfire on the McCain campaign by renewing discussion of McCain's service on the board of the U.S. Council for World Freedom, "an ultraconservative right-wing group."

In two interviews with The Associated Press in August and September, Singlaub said McCain became associated with the organization in the early 1980s as McCain launched his political career. McCain was elected to the House in 1982.

Singlaub said McCain was a supporter but not an active member.

"McCain was a new guy on the block learning the ropes," Singlaub said. "I think I met him in the Washington area when he was just a new congressman. We had McCain on the board to make him feel like he wasn't left out. It looks good to have names on a letterhead who are well-known and appreciated.

"I don't recall talking to McCain at all on the work of the group," Singlaub said.

McCain has said he resigned from the council in 1984 and asked in 1986 to have his name removed from the group's letterhead.

"I didn't know whether (the group's activity) was legal or illegal, but I didn't think I wanted to be associated with them," McCain said in a 1986 newspaper interview.

Singlaub does not recall any McCain resignation in 1984 or May 1986. Nor does Joyce Downey, who oversaw the group's day-to-day activities.

"That's a surprise to me," Singlaub said. "This is the first time I've ever heard that. There may have been someone in his office communicating with our office."

"I don't ever remember hearing about his resigning, but I really wasn't worried about that part of our activities, a housekeeping thing," said Singlaub. "If he didn't want to be on the board that's OK. It wasn't as if he had been active participant and we were going to miss his help. He had no active interest. He certainly supported us."

A news article and two documents tie McCain to the council in 1985, a year after he says he resigned. The group's Internal Revenue Service filing in 1985, covering the previous year, lists McCain as a member of the council's advisory board. In October 1985, a States News Service report placed McCain, Rep. Tom Loeffler, R-Texas, and an Arizona congressman at a Washington awards ceremony staged by the council.

On Tuesday, the McCain campaign addressed the resignation by saying the candidate disassociated himself from "one Arizona-based group when questions were raised about its activities

Taking an opportunity to attack the Obama-Biden ticket, the McCain campaign added that as a House member and later as a senator, McCain fought against communist influence in Central America while Sen. Joe Biden tried to cut off money for anti-communist forces in El Salvador and Nicaragua.

The renewed attention over McCain's association with Singlaub's group comes as his campaign steps up criticism of Obama's dealings with Ayers, now a college professor who co-founded the Weather Underground in the 1960s and years later worked with Obama on the board of an education reform group in Chicago. Ayers held a meet-the-candidate event at his home when Obama first ran for public office in the mid-1990s.

In McCain's case, he was a House member and a board member of Singlaub's council when, as a new congressman, he voted for military assistance to the Nicaraguan Contras, a CIA-organized guerrilla force. In 1984, Congress cut off military assistance to the rebels.

Months before the cutoff, top Reagan administration officials ramped up a secret White House-directed supply network run by national security advisers Robert McFarlane and John Poindexter. The operation's day-to-day activities were handled by National Security Council aide Oliver North, who relied on retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Richard Secord to carry out the operation. The goal was to keep the Contras operating until Congress could be persuaded to resume CIA funding.

Singlaub's private group became the public front for the secret White House activity.

"It was noted that they were trying to act as suppliers. It was pretty good cover for us," Secord, the field operations chief for the secret effort, said Tuesday in an interview.

The White House-directed network's covert arms shipments, financed in part by the Reagan administration's secret arms sales to Iran, exploded into the Iran-Contra affair in November 1986. The scandal proved to be the undoing of Singlaub's council.

In 1987, the IRS withdrew tax-exempt status from Singlaub's group because of its activities on behalf of the Contras.

Peter Kornbluh, co-author of "The Iran-Contra Scandal: A Declassified History," said the Council on World Freedom was crucial to diverting public attention from the Reagan White House's fundraising for the Contras.

Singlaub and the council publicly urged private support for the Contras, providing what Singlaub later called "a lightning rod" to explain how the rebels sustained themselves despite Congress' cutoff.

In October 1986, the secrecy of North's network unraveled after one of its planes was shot down over Nicaragua. One American crewman, Eugene Hasenfus, was captured by the Nicaraguan government. At first, Reagan administration officials lied by saying that the plane had no connection to the U.S. government and was part of Singlaub's operation.

"I resented it that reporters thought it was my plane. I don't run a sloppy operation," Singlaub told The AP.

In an interview last month, Downey, the full-time employee of Singlaub's council, said she has a clear memory of McCain resigning in 1986, but not earlier.

"It was during the time when the U.S. Council had been wrongly accused of being owners of the Hasenfus plane downed in Nicaragua," said Downey. "A couple of days after that, I was in Washington and called home to get messages from my mother. I returned that call and a staff person wanted to ask for the resignation of Congressman McCain."

When Hasenfus was shot down, McCain was in the final month of his first campaign for the Senate seat he still holds.

McCain's office responded quickly. McCain said he had resigned from the council in 1984. Further, McCain said that in May 1986 he asked the group to remove his name from the letterhead. McCain's office produced two letters from 1984 and 1986 to back his account.

Two weeks after Anderson's column, a letter from McCain addressed to Singlaub asks that the congressman's name be taken off the board because he didn't have time for the council.

Singlaub told AP that "certainly by 1984," he had purged the World Anti-Communist League of extremists. Singlaub complains that American news media wrote that the league hadn't gotten rid of extremist elements and tried to tarnish the league's credibility, "making something evil out of fighting communism."

OLD NEWS and a duplicate thread to boot... not to mention the intellectual laziness that goes into copy and paste postings...

It was 2001, on September 11th, that Ayers said he wished he would have done more bombings, didn't regret doing them, and wouldn't count out the need for having to do so again... Obama's reply... "I thought he was rehabilitated."

For 20 years, Obama sat in a Racist Church...Rev. Wright goes on TV and reiterates his Crackpot Racist theories, like WHITES invented AIDS to kill black people.... Obama's reply... "Thats not the man I knew."

Obama buys a house, for a song, from one of his buddies... Tony Rezco is indicted and convicted on fraud... Obama's reply... "Thats not the Tony Rezco I knew."

Obama has surrounded himself with Racists, Terrorists, Socialists and Con-Men for his entire life and, when he gets caught, pretends like he never actually knew what these people were all about.

Thats some strong Kool Aid...

The context of the Cold War shaped the foreign policy of that time. It is amazing how quickly you ignore that.

I know exactly what I'm doing with the copy and paste postings....Creep.

When you have explosives placed in the twin towers before the aircraft stunt that brought down two huge skyscrapers
and killed close to 3,000 mostly Americans; that's terrorism. those who placed the explosives in the twin towers are the real terrorist.

A relative of George Bush was in charge of security for the twin towers and allowed the building to be wired with explosives. They made sure John O'neil a top F.B.I. expert on terrorism would be killed along with many others.

No wreckage from flight 77 can be found at the Pentagon crime scene, this stunt was also engineered by the real terrorist. Our Rights and freedoms under the Constitution are also under attack. This is just the beginning for the false-flag operation was needed to bring about all the evil set forth by the needless war in Iraq. All the lives lost for Americans and others happened as a result of the greedy Anti-Americans who work for the Israeli's, and to them our constitution a obstacle in the way.

The unAmerican conflicts of interest of Cheney and bush is treason plain and simple. The so-called president and vice-president are so dirty they have to lay-low throughout the whole McCain campaign, while they attempt to trick the American people into voting for tyranny. That is truthly disgusting in the history of America for the so-called president and V.P. to hide during a presidental campaign. It's disgusting.

I guess there are no terrorists then, since no one placed explosives there before 9/11.

The whole point of having a bureaucracy is so that you can survive if you lose 1 person's expertise.

I have a lot of relatives myself, somehow I doubt any of them would let me wire buildings with explosives.

What was the Israeli motive for getting the US to invade Iraq? We already had them under major sanctions and kept down their military with no-fly zones. Further, what rights have you, as an American citizen, actually lost?

Its disgusting to not campaign when your popularity is quite low?

I think it is disgusting to insult the intelligence of people and spew the garbage about 9/11 that you are spewing, but hey, it is only my opinion.

This is ridiculous. You are making a mockery of the truth behind 9/11. How can you possibly think that somehow in a few months, Bush and Cheney could setup such a massive elaborate conspiracy? It is obvious to anyone with 3 and 1/2 working brain cells, such a plan absolutely must have been constructed no less then 2 or 3 years before it occurred.

Stop putting your political partisan stupidity into the equation. Clearly the New York Port Authority, Silverstein, and some faction of the military had to be in on it. Other than that, there is zero evidence that Bush, Cheney, or Bush's brother, had anything to do with this. Nothing at all. To say otherwise, is simple partisan stupidity. Quit it. You are discrediting yourself and all the people who want to know the truth.

Yes, I suspect you do... Thats why its intellectual laziness.

If you would like to discuss 9/11, there is an appropriate section for doing so and this is not it.

You can start HERE and HERE

Please take the time to read through those two threads and then post your thoughts about 9/11 in that section. I'll be glad to set your mind at ease with the truth, I offer you reality, something you won't hear from other "Truthers".

What a copp out! You just want Octoldit to go away before tearing both of your puny arguments into a billion pieces. My whole point is when living in a glass house don't throw stones. All the guilt by association B.S. directed toward the candidate best able to free this nation from tyranny is like comparing apples with Continents in terms of the evil deeds aligned to Bush, McCain, and all those involved in outrageous criminal activity not only aboard, but right here in the United States of America. Their greed has them working to destry the Constitution.

    Well said Oct!!

Unfortunately this seems to be a very "right" forum here. These people do not talk issues, they just keep on slingin negative drivel. The "issues" here are "He's a terrorist", "he does drugs", etc. etc., not the economy, not wall street, not family values (Although we know they could never get near this topic during this election without getting laughed offstage). So just smile inside knowing by this time next week this forum will be full of whines because they still won't believe Obama was elected. We might even see a "cheating" rumor or 2, who knows?......cough 2000, 04 cough cough..

Most of the socialists we're dealing with, idealize the soviets, and thus it isn't just ignoring it... more like willfully dismissing it. Many would have rather us lost, and the Soviets won the cold war. Uncle Joe, Joseph Stalin, was loved and adored by the American left. Had the left wing of America been allowed to win, Soviet style Gulags would have dotted the entire US.

I have not heard such an asinine piece of fantasy so twisted and perverse in quite some time. No one is deceived with all the diversions, the fact of the matter is Communism which Jews like Trotsky took over to Russia forming the Soviet Union is the Real issue.

Outside of the Country known as Israel the largest population of Jews reside in New York City. It’s no coincidence that Trotsky with the money and blessing of the international Zionist bankers (Federal Reserve) left from “New York City” on his mission to destroy the Russian Government.

The media that they control has always placed the focus on Germany, but the heinous crimes of Stalin who was Jewish were hidden from the American people. The media’s central focus has been on the so-called holocaust and what Germany did. They have tried to conceal the fact that the Soviet Union was Jewish Communism.

And Jewish communism is what they intend to overshadow our democracy with if we don’t wake-up from the daze they have us in from all the fluorinated water, fascist information indoctrination, and bribery. Are you not trying to convince Americans we love Stalin, which is a code phase to mean we love Communism?

    You must be insane!

The cat is already out the bag. It’s the Israelis that’s trying to overthrow the U.S. with Communism and Fascism. And if you want to talk about gulags look at what Chertoff has done in terms of the many empty concentration camps that have been springing up all across American. Not the mention whats going on in Cuba, and the attempt to replace our justice system with military justice/torture.

They have already made torture legal they just hope to weaken the nation some more before they try and implement the type of things they do in Bagdad. In case the slow methodical Fabian approach has gotten around your radar/awareness, the use of the Tasar gun is legalized torture, and many Americans have died from it.

I’m confident true Americans see how you communist/terrorist are trying to use fear, lies, and negativity to replace freedom with communism (by McCain). The N.S.A now spies on all Americans; this is straight from the Soviet Union. Chertoff now employs former K.G.B and STASI agents working in the so-called department of Homeland Security.

We would have never had this unneeded Agency if it was not for the false flag operation. We now have a Zionist over this bogus governmental agency. The secret banks that make up the core of the Federal Reserve are Israeli banks/ banking houses. Understanding who financed what happened in New York City is the simple use of common sense. Socialism has nothing to do with it.

I totally disagree. McCain is an American hero. He loves this Nation and has proven it. When he had the chance to be released when a POW, he STAYED...it's important to note that he stayed even though he was in bad shape physically. By him staying, they tortured him daily by breaking bones.

There aren't very many men who would not have taken the chance to get out of that hell rather than stay and take more torture!!!

So you are saying this man, who sacrified so much because of his strong moral fiber, is a communist? Do I have that correct?

Yet, obama has friends coming out of the woodwork who openly state, 1) damn America 2) I wish I would have bombed more 3) I am not sorry for bombing

Have you not seen the multitudes of video? Or do you think like Rev Wright and Farrakhan that he is the Messiah and The Savior?

Many people go to air shows and see the fighter planes and find it as entertainment to watch them perform in the air. However these air machines are the single most barbaric hi-tech destruction and murder inventions in the history of the world. Loaded with nukes they can destroy whole cities.

Do you have any idea what McCain was doing to the people of Vietnam with the aircraft he piloted? Do you have any idea how much these people suffered and died as a result of what was done by pilots in Vietnam? Because McCain was an American are you saying he has license to maim and kill other peoples of the world?

War is not pretty and what was done to McCain I’m fairly certain he has done far more to those people in greater number than what he had to endure. He living to talk about it and should have acquired some hint of gratitude. And all the business about he could have left but stayed sounds like a fish story to me.

My point is that war is an extremely serious matter, and someone who has undergone that type of treatment and has not acquired any compassion for the lives of other peoples, races, and nations never will. He guy has a cruel coldness about him that pushes him toward more war, rather than exercising the type of judgment that can, and does avoid the cruelties of wars.

I simple cannot indentify one trait or hint of a virtue in John McCain that suggests he has it within him not to see other people suffer the way he has suffered. I fact a strong case for just the opposite can be made.

The whole point is when multi-national corporations are allowed to define our foreign policy, and money comes before principles civilization take many turns for the worst. The America Right or Wrong B.S. is what needs to stopped, and I'm saying the communist will use McCain as an puppet just as they used Bush as an puppet to further communism not the rule of law under the Constitution. Those who are greedy and have no ethics have already been spoken for.

How can you be so naive to try and relate this silly fantasy of guilt by association to what McCain is doing in South America?

I see it totally differently. All the soldiers that I know personally, are exactly the opposite. The warriors are usually the last ones to want to go to war again. This is especially true of those that have been captured and tortured.

A person who has suffered and knows what it is like will always be more understanding than those who have not. McCain is not a very good speaker and his messed up bones make him stand, walk and sit "oddly" and gives him a strange look. His heart is full and in the right place. He is a straight shooter and honest.

I can't believe you are damning McCain for serving his country! This blows my mind. He ruins his health. Gives up years of his life. Puts his very life ont he line and you damn him?

It reminds me of my husband's ex. He worked many, many hours for years in order to give her the "things" she wanted. She stayed home. He missed vacations. Holidays. Not because he didn't want to get a break or take vacation, he loves them. It was so he could give her the house, cars, vacations, jewelry, etc. that she wanted. Then when they divorced, she brain washed the kids that he was a "bad father" because he wasn't home very much!!!

McCain did what was REQUIRED of him by the GOVERNMENT. He didn't create the war. He didn't ask to be shot down. He didn't create the bombs. He followed the Governments ORDERS. It wasn't up for debate. He gave you your rights to be on here bashing his PATRIOTIC SERVICE.

What have you done for the Nation? Anything?
