Obama to mandate new, higher gas mileage standards (aka trading blood for oil)

Car engines and transmissions are already about as efficient as they can get, for running on gasoline. So, the only way you can increase the gas mileage of cars, is by using hybrid technology (doubling the price of cars), different fuels (which Barry isn't doing here)... or making the cars smaller and lighter.

And it's been well established for years, that smaller and lighter cars are less crashworthy than larger, heavier cars. Crash two small cars together, and you have significantly more chance of death and injury, than if you crash two large cars together. And of course, if you crash a big car and a small one together, guess which car's occupants get smashed up more?

By mandating higher gas mileage by legislative fiat, Obama is directly causing the deaths of hundreds or thousands more Americans. And he is doing simply for the purpose of saving gas. He has made the decision that the oil saved, is worth the additional deaths and injuries his decision will cause. He is, quite literally, trading blood for oil.

When can we expect the "NO BLOOD FOR OIL" hysterics who kept attending protests of the Gulf Wars, to show up outside the White House with their big signs, mindless chants, and stained bongs in response to this latest decision?

New U.S. fuel-efficiency standards for automobiles are to be announced Tuesday by President Barack Obama, various news Web sites reported Monday. In part, the Obama administration will direct the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to jointly set limits on tailpipe emissions, the Detroit News reported. Politico.com also reported news of the pending announcement, saying the new Corporate Average Fuel Economy, or CAFE, standards will be promoted by the White House as historic because they’re meant to avoid a patchwork of standards in different states.

There are still ways to get higher mileage out of cars on gas & diesel. Hell the new Volkswagen turbo diesel get 52 miles per gallon highway. And cars like the Prius and the new Honda Insight are not crazy expensive either.

Now there is all the new technology (new meaning in it's advanced sense) with electric and hydrogen fuel cells etc. that is of course going to be pricier going into new production. But that too will come down just like hybrids or any technology once it's more in demand and more mass produced.

And the old big car small car thing is an obvious red herring. To go by that logic NO SMALL CARS COULD BE ON THE ROAD. Or really no cars could be on the road because they might get hit by a dump truck... we'd all need Hummers... LOL! That's ridiculous.

And there have always been tons of small cars on the road. I remember in my High School days in the early 70's American cars were a lot bigger (and hoggy:)) than they are today. But there was also the VW Beetle & MG Midget & Ford Pinto & Chevy Vega & Triumph Spitfire & Chevy Chevette & AMC Pacer & MGB & Sunbeam & Jaguar XKE & that little 2 seat Corvette... on & on & on.

And what's out their right now... Mazda Miata... Mini Cooper... Toyota Yaris... Nissan Sentra... Mazda 3... Toyota Corrolla... Mazda RX7... Honda Civic... Scion. There's tons of small cars on the road today.

We've always had a mix of vehicle sizes and we survived just fine as a nation. A lot of people love small cars... they're called sports car people!

Hey if I thought that we'd all be forced to drive something like the "Smart Car" I'd be with ya. That's not going to be the trend... that's not what's going to happen.

Things like the new Chevy Malibu hybrid bringing a nice full size car in with good mileage numbers that's more what's going to happen. A mix of car sizes from Mazda RX7 size to Chevy Mailbu & Ford Escape size. Plus still some really big hybrids like the Escalade & Tahoe.

This is going to be fine. People feared going from those safe horse & buggies to that horseless carriage too.

Do you know that thing had gasoline on board!!! OMG that's like caring a fire bomb in your back seat...

Didn't have to worry about that with a good old horse!:)

Chill... relax... embrace modernization & change.

well its good to know that again you show you know zero about cars...zero.
hybrid is one way, and also they don't cost 2 times as much, more..yes, not even close to 2 times..and that's before you add in the large gas saving. There is other ways, to do it, but I am sure its all over your head....

Well he did promise change, it should be interesting...

Don't kid yourself, Top, horses have gas too--and in the rear end as well!

Easy solve, Acorn, all he has to do is mandate slower speed limits and the safety factor goes right back up.

Is President Obama making a good decision, requiring smaller, lighter cars to save oil, and accepting the increase in injuries and deaths that those smaller, lighter cars will produce?

Um, of course Obama is making a bad decision. He usually
does.

Small cars are unsafe and people don't like buying them.
They don't make em tough like they used to either.

The new plastics and imitation metal don't fare well in accidents.
You can actually total new cars in relatively minor collisions.

The smart car is a good example of one dumb death trap, that
only a liberal could design.

It will hurt the car companies that are forced to sell these
death traps. But they have no choice now.

With CHANGE! there is no longer choice.

The new motto should be "Let's get rid of CHANGE! and offer CHOICE!

Except for the pirate situation and my dog could have made the same call, he has not made even one good decision since ... well none ever that I know of.

As for his explanation to the higher cost we will all have to pay for cars ...

He said today that yes the standards will cost us more but we will get that money back over 3 years by how much we save on gas.

The people are too dumb to realize that he is going to have to raise the gas tax because if people did reduce their oil consumption then the tax would reduce too and he would have to raise it to gain back what was lost, so there is no winning.

its just going to cost more period. And only the uber stupid will think they are going to save just because obama said so.

yes people hate fuel effecent cars, thats why there sales have gone up, but people love big SUV's and large cards ( sales have dropped)

Ah, yes.....another lil' Gem to add to "conservatives'" House-Of-Lame.

It ranks right-up-there, with....seat-belts & air-bags....who's implementations (absolutely) DESTROYED the auto-industry....just like the auto-industry (and, their apologists) predicted.

"Adams' ruling also faces attack in Congress, which in 1974 gave itself the right to veto any such decisions by the Transportation Department within 60 days. The Secretary had barely made his announcement when Bud Shuster, a Pennsylvania Republican, introduced a resolution in the House to overturn the decision. He cited, among other things, the bags' cost. Detroit automen have estimated that a reliable bag system would add $200 to $300 to the price of a car; the Government's figure is about half that."

I guess you'd need to have been old-enough to remember the Glory Days of the U.S. auto-industry....when they pretty-much did what they wanted.

He can't help it.....he's a Dem.

"The NCAP program has always fared better under Democratic Administrations than under Republican Administrations even though Republicans profess to believe in the free market. Perhaps they believe in an uninformed free market which benefits the seller over the buyer."

:p
