This is one portion that seems to be quite interesting at this time:

religious freedom is not absolute, or unlimited. Cases under the Free Exercise Clause involve balancing the freedom to engage in religious activity against the government's right to pass laws for the health, safety, and general welfare of its citizens.

But the basis of it is this:

First Amendment's Establishment Clause prohibits the government from making any law “respecting an establishment of religion.” This clause not only forbids the government from establishing an official religion, but also prohibits government actions that unduly favor one religion over another. It also prohibits the government from unduly preferring religion over non-religion, or non-religion over religion.

But the basis of it is this:

well actually the basis is this:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof

that means no state religion (ala much of Europe and the RCC at one point or other) or the CofE in England or the Kirk in Scotland etc.

and free exercise if pretty self explanatory.

both pretty understandable given the circumstances driving people from those places to risk everything to escape the persecution it brought on them back home.

Yes. . .and I quoted some more specific details from the establishment clause. . .that seemed to apply pretty well to today's situation, where some people seem to want to impose the Christian religion as the "national" religion (which is totally against the Constitution), and other who defend the right of some religions to be treated differently because of their specific religious dogmas (i.e., contraception).

So. . .you may want to read again the two quotes I provided, addressing specifically those issues.

no, you posted to some interpretations and a portion.

this poll is intended simply to establish knowledge and is unrelated to the contraception matter in the news. we have active threads on that subject.

So. . .all you wanted to know was if we knew this:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion

What good would that do, if we don't know what the meaning (or official interpretation) of that clause is. . .Are you going to accuse me again of not staying focused on the OP? I noticed that YOU allowed yourself to expand on the litteral words by stating "or prohibiting the exercise of religion." So. . .we both expanded on the main quote. What makes you right and me wrong?

And, let me ask you: what prompted your sudden interest in the establishment clause?
It just came out of the top of your head. . .unrelated to any current happening, like Santorum push for hyper religious policies, or the "supposed" attempt to "force" the Catholic Church to cover their employees's right to get free birth control, as well as the Viagra they already receive coverage for?

Who? The Leftist stereotype of right wingers?

...and other who defend the right of some religions to be treated differently because of their specific religious dogmas (i.e., contraception).
What if government were to pass a law forbidding people to face west while praying? Since only Muslims are required by their religion to face west during prayer, would you also suggest they were looking "to be treated differently because of their specific religious dogmas" or would you consider that a violation of either the establishment or free exercise clause?

No. . .the stereotype represented by Santorum and Bachman.

I haven't heard of any US government trying to FORBID people to do anything, NOR to FORCE people to do something. . .in fact, what I heard was the US government trying to keep the OPTIONS of choice for women.

And. . .succeeding by going AROUND the dogmas (or preferential treatment) of the Catholic Church.

Once again, though, you are giving a very silly example! Why would anyone forbid anyone else to face West, or East, or up to the sky?
You are scraping the bottom of the barrel again!

Oh, using the menial labor to try to make your point?

By the way, obviously you'llhave more "leaning Right" who know about the establishment clause. . .
You have more "leaning Right" all together in this forum, after most "leaning left" were either brow beaten or discourage by rhe constant ganging up on any opinion they dare to express by thr exteme right posters, including the new star mod!

It's like taking a poll about the virgin mary dogma in a Catholic Church!

no argument but that is not the point the poll seeks to explore.

Please provide me a direct quote, with a credible link, where Santorum, and/or Bachman, have declared their intention to transform America into a Christian Theocracy.

Then you must not be paying attention. Catholic organizations are now being forced to provide employees with health care plans that provide contraception and abortificiants. Back in 2005, Rod Blago issued a government decree forcing Catholic pharmacists to dispense the morning after pill.
