A top US Republican and aides have been shot during baseball practice in Virginia, a congressman says.

Police in the upmarket Washington DC suburb of Alexandria said they were investigating a "multiple shooting" and a suspect was in custody. Alabama lawmaker Mo Brooks told CNN House of Representatives Majority Whip Steve Scalise and aides were shot.

Police tweeted they were "investigating multiple shooting 400 block E Monroe St. Suspect believed in custody".

Some crazy bastard shooting from the fenceline! It seems that Scalise will survive this attack. Thank God the police were right there but it seems that a couple of security guards got hits as well... hope all involved get through this.

"A pistol against a rifle is not a fair fight," Brooks continued, describing "ten to twenty rounds" coming from the assailant through a fence before the security detail engaged.

"Once they started engaging, they exhibited great, great courage," Brooks said, adding that it "seemed to take forever for officials to know we were under attack."
