When it was discovered that CFCs were destroying ozone, they were banned and the ozone layer started to recover.
The CFC industry was small potatoes and had no clout.
By contrast, the oil and coal industries have a long history of political influence and meddling. The initial opposition to restricting carbon dioxide emissions came from scientists bought and paid for by these industies plus a few fellow travellers and contrarians who do not like being part of a consensus.
Throw enough mud and some of it will stick and this is what we have now.
The climate change deniers are worse than the holocaust deniers because the stakes are higher.
