It makes NO DIFFERENCE to me or to you or to anyone other than two people if one of them marries a sister or a brother. The reality is that this does not guarantee that they will have defective children, it only increases the probability that defects in the DNA they share will be amplified.

IN order to assure that all pharaohs be 100% royal, for centuries Egyptian kings and even some kings were the children
of brother-sister unions. The same was true in Hawaii and other Polynesian societies, and that is how the British House of Windsor is genetically more German than British.

It is extremely more likely that there will be fewer women genetically mutilated among Somalis residing in the US that those residing in Somalia.

Ted Cruz thinks that his main attention be directed towards financing the present genocide carried out by the IDF in Israel. And at this point I will note that there is no way that a majority of Texans are Israelis or even Jews.

Nasir Abdi-Omar, a queer Somali-American who lives in Minneapolis, has experienced this catch-22 first-hand. “I’ve had to deal with ignorance on both sides,” he explains, “Being a queer Somali person in the Twin Cities sometimes can be alienating…I’m too western for Somalis and too eastern for white, gay America.”

Abdi-Omar’s Somali heritage is just as much a part of him as his queer identity, which is just as much a part of him as his Americanness. Compromising any of these identities for the sake of the others is not a sacrifice that he can make while remaining true to himself.

“I love so many things about Somali culture.” Abdi-Omar says, “[T]he sense of community, food, and the witty banter,” he pauses, “The disconnect with my heritage came to me at an older age.” That disconnect was directly related to coming out. “The notion of queerness isn’t necessarily accepted in Somali culture,” he explains. Despite that, “there are plenty of openly gay Somalis in the Twin Cities [and] more that are uncomfortable coming out.”

Abdi-Omar personally has found community through networking groups like Quorum, and is quick to say that he enjoys places like the Saloon and the Eagle. However, it took a while to find a place where he could fully express his queerness alongside his Somali heritage.


Enter Queer Somalis, or QS, an online group created in late 2018, by a Somali-American known simply as Del. “Del didn’t feel like we had a platform as queer Somalis to build community,” Abdi-Omar says, so Del took initiative and began building that space himself, with Abdi-Omar at his side as a co-founder. “It’s a digital platform used for queer Somalis globally to connect, build community, exchange ideas, showcase art, and assist with emergency funding if someone is in a dangerous situation,” Abdi-Omar explains

US Africa Command has announced at least four more airstrikes in Somalia as the Trump administration continues to bomb the country at a record pace with virtually no media coverage in the United States.

AFRICOM said in one press release that its forces launched airstrikes against the ISIS affiliate in Somalia’s northeast Puntland region on December 15 and December 16. It said the attacks were launched about 43 miles to the southeast of the Gulf of Aden port city of Bosaso, where the US has been backing local Puntland forces in a fight against ISIS militants based in caves.

The command provided no additional details and has stopped sharing information on casualties or assessments of potential civilian harm since earlier this year. US-backed Puntland forces haven’t issued any statements on military operations in recent days. The Puntland Counterterrorism Operations Telegram account occasionally releases images of the dead bodies of alleged ISIS fighters who were killed in US-backed operations.

AFRICOM also released two separate press releases announcing airstrikes against al-Shabaab on December 15 in an area about 30 miles to the northeast of the port city of Kismayo in southern Somalia’s Jubaland region. “Specific details about units and assets will not be released to ensure continued operations security,” the command said in both releases.

The bombings bring the total number of airstrikes launched by AFRICOM in Somalia this year to 116, an unprecedented number. According to New America, an organization that tracks the air war, the figure is more than the total number of airstrikes launched in Somalia during the administrations of Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and George W. Bush combined.

The latest airstrike comes amid reports of civilian casualties in recent operations conducted by the US and US-backed forces in southern Somalia. Last week, local media reported that more than 30 civilians were killed by an attack on a village near Mogadishu that was carried out by a US-trained Somali government force.

On November 15, US airstrikes and US-backed Somali ground forces targeted the village of Jamame, which is near Kismayo. The attack killed at least 11 civilians, including seven children, according to a report from Drop Site News.

A US airstrike in Somalia’s northern Sanag region, west of Puntland, that was launched on September 13, also killed a civilian clan leader who was known for his peace efforts, according to family members, local officials, and a committee that investigated the airstrike. AFRICOM claimed he was an al-Shabaab weapons dealer, but has provided no evidence to back up the assertion.
