The media loved Reagan. Where I find issue with this is the idea that this is anything new. From what I read, the unity many of us grew up with in the 1940s and 1950s was unusual for America. From the very earliest days, people opposed each other, tooth and nail. The Tories were driven out of our naiton, back to Canada, or back to Britain., and their land was seized. That was usually the fate of the political losers. The Federalists did all they could too drive Jefferson and his adherents out, but failed (re Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798), and lost control.
