It's in human nature to want to tear down somebody who seems larger.  Some people call it "hating" and those who practice it "haters".  However, at times it seems ridiculous, as showing enthusiasm for math shouldn't get you labeled as stupid dork.  Note, the same enthusiasm in other courses would be encouraged by peers.
