Many very successful businessmen have gone through bankruptcy at least once in their lives.  President Lincoln experienced bankruptcy once, but unlike unsaved businessmen, he did not allow the process to excuse his debts so he spent years faithfully settling those debts in spite of the fact that legally he could have essentially forgiven himself of those obligations.
