The purpose of the census is to determine how many people live in the US and where they live.  What more do they need to know than, how many people live in your house?

The rationale for counting heads is to apportion representation, that's it.  That's all they need to know.

The school used to send around a census sort of from from the state, asking for demographic information.  Under "race or ethnicity", there were several choices.  I used to cross the word "Indian" from "American Indian", and mark that box.  No one ever said anything, but I was counted as "white, not hispanic" anyway.  Someone changed my answer.

There's no such thing as an American Indian anyway.  Indians live in, or are from, India.  Further, I'm a native American.  I was born here, so that makes me a native.
