Two contrasting worst natural disasters in world history occurred in 1930–1931. They were the Drought of 1930–1931 (Arkansas’s worst drought of the twentieth century) and the China Flood of 1931 (the worst natural disaster of the 20th century). Was the timing of both historical events purely coincidental? Sceptics of my theory (the Law of Global Water Equilibrium) will have to dig deep into history for more striking examples.

1. Drought of 1930–1931

Arkansas’s worst drought of the twentieth century took place in 1930–1931. Twenty-three states across the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys and into the mid-Atlantic region were caught in its grip. The severest drought centered upon eight Southern states, with Arkansas sixteen percent worse than the other states based on weather statistics. Agrarian blight became a precursor to corollary social, political, and disaster relief issues, which escalated and attracted national attention....

Agricultural failure and famine in Arkansas due to the drought were eased though not erased by mid-1931. The struggle against weather and finance was not over as the Dust Bowl started and the Depression continued. Sharecroppers continued to toil under adverse social conditions but were on a path toward change. Nationally, Democrats handily won the White House, ushering in the New Deal. According to historian Ben Johnson, “drought-stricken Arkansas became a metaphor for anxieties spawned by the Depression.”

2. China Flood of 1931

On this day in 1931 (Aug 18 1931), the Yangtze River in China peaks during a horrible flood that kills 3.7 million people directly and indirectly over the next several months.

This was perhaps the worst natural disaster of the 20th century.

The Yangtze River runs through southern China, one of the most populated areas on Earth. The region’s people, most lived at subsistence level, depended on the river for water for their personal and farming needs. In April, the river-basin area received far-above-average rainfall. When torrential rains came again in July, the stage was set for disaster. The Yangtze flooded over a 500-square-mile area. The rising waters drove 500,000 people from their homes by the beginning of August.

The 1931 Central China floods or the Central China floods of 1931 are a series of floods that occurred during the Nanjing decade in the Republic of China era. It is generally considered the deadliest natural disaster ever recorded, and almost certainly the deadliest of the 20th century (when pandemics are discounted) and in China. The human casualties are estimated from lows of 400,000 to highs of 3.7 million to 4 million....
