is this a good idea one week before the election ?

while I admire his honesty it just seems like he wants to throw in the towel and giving Sarkozy the win.

gotta love the tern jobless rate being associated with the number, can we just adm it there is no journalism in the MSM ?

Hollande is on track to win the May 6 runoff against President Nicolas Sarkozy, due largely to the conservative leader's failure to meet promises to lower stubbornly high unemployment in the euro zone's second largest economy.

Sarkozy, who would become the first French president to lose a re-election bid in more than 30 years, received a fresh blow on Thursday when the jobless rate hit nearly 3 million, its highest level since September 1999.

Hollande said labor leaders were warning that companies were preparing a round of job cuts after the end of the presidential campaign, during which Sarkozy has done everything in his power to avoid high profile industrial closures.

"The unions are aware of this. Decisions are being prepared which have been postponed," Hollande told Le Parisien newspaper in an interview. "It is not our victory which will trigger redundancy plans after May 6."

Obama is doing his best to establish our very own Department of Redundancy Department, modeled after the French DRD of course.

well it IS his victory that will cause layoffs (correct term for redundancy plans). saying it won't does not change this fact.

Most of the countries that have defy the recession are socialist. Australia and China are examples. I sure the French socialist will copy them and spend money. This spending will create Jobs as it has in other countries Cutting spending has failed in England and now it is in a double dip recession.

Oh man...what foolishness.

If government spending generates jobs, the US should be at SUPER DUPER full employment (and Europe too). The US gov has been spending TRILLIONS (much of it deficit spending) for the past several years and unemployment is still high and economy weak. So, once again, you are WRONG!!!

You put your faith in big government. I put my faith in individual liberty and limited government. BIG difference. If you knew the horrendous history of big government, you might change your mind...but once one is indoctrinated as you are, changing your mind is difficult.

PS...China is not doing well. When you build huge cities for no one to live in, things are not good...

Indoctrination comes in many ways. The Conserevatives are using a classical model against big Government. The Socialist are using Keynes and others. The USA even under the Democrates is no a Socialist country. However Obama limited spending seems to have stop the USA having a double dip recession unlike the UK. Give me examples of big government failure. Most of the countries hit by the recession did not have big government but an uncontroled Private Capitalist System. Controls of both government and Private Enterprise are essential. .

More silliness from you.

First, no one in America in the know, would say Obama's spending is LIMITED. 5 trillion in deficit spending along with Trillions more in non-deficit spending is not limited. All this spending did nothing to HELP the economy and it certainly did not stop the US from a double dip...we are in a recession now or about to be...even after all the government spending YOU so love...will you ever learn that Keynesian economics is a complete and utter failure?

Uncontrolled Private Capitalist System....WTF are you talking about? You being Aussie may not know that the private sector in the US faces a myriad of rules and regulations and has for decades. This silly belief by leftists like you that the US private sector is uncontrolled is so F-ing absurd. It is propaganda YOU have accepted...see the brainwashing????

What we have in the US is Crony Fascism...this is where big business and big government collude to enrich themselves...this is but one of the horrendous consequences of a huge omnipresent centralized government.

Europe is a lost cause. Between their socialism and uncontrolled immigration policies, they will never be able to recover, and we are heading down the same path.

they have at least come to recognize the peril of their immigration policies but the gimme mentality makes it hard for those not-pegged left politicians who want to fix it from doing so. Catch-22 there.

The may have recognized it, but they haven't stopped it. A lot of Europeans now want to leave their country for the U.S, Canada and Australia. Seems like they've given up and don't want to defend their own European cultures. That's what multiculturalism can do to you.

Dogtower, You seem to be obsessed with Islam. Most of the migrants in Europe are not Muslims. European countries except Britain , share a land border with other countries. They can no more stop migration from neighboring countries than the USA can from Mexico. Even Australia can not stop migration even although we are an island. Illegal migrants come by boat from Indonesia. We can not send them back because Indonesia will not take them. They are not Indonesian but refugees from places like Afghanistan and Iraq.

Australia does also take legal migrants as well as we have a low birth rate. However I doubt if many Americans will come here as our tax rate is far higher and with a high dollar compare to the American dollar it is very expensive. We have a mixed economy partly government owned and partly private. I agree that both sides need control./

A new poll showed Hollande taking 52.5 percent of the vote in the second round of the French presidential election, with Sarkozy taking 47.5 percent, a rise of two points and Sarkozy is gaining momentum after a face-to-face TV debate. The Economist published a critical article on Hollande, calling him a "dangerous man" who could risk France's economic prosperity by his socialist economic policies.

muslims are the fastest growing demographic in the eurozone in part because of lax immigration and in part because of prolific birth rates. and as many have no work they create a massive demand on welfare that even the least rosy eyed socialist economist never anticipated. ergo money problems galore.

I figured the propensity of dangerous snakes there would be enough to hold down immigration of Americans. eek !

I think the difference Between the USA and Australia and most of Europe is not just snakes. We have only two poisonous snakes here and death by snake bite is rare. The difference is that the USA always had conservative governments. Obama is conservative by our standards. We have had many Labor governments. We are further to the left in mot things even religion. WE have spent to avoid the GFC. This has kept unemployment low and wages low.

This is in constrast to the American situation reported in today's New York Times. There"Still the plaintive pleas for work keep coming online. That is because carpenters, bricklayers, roofers, painters, electricians, plumbers and carpet installers have largely been left out of the economic recovery. Builders are not hiring, homeowners are deferring renovations and governments are postponing highway and bridge projects. Economists are
forecasting that the Labor Department will announce on Friday that the nation’s employers added about 165,000 net jobs last month — few of them in the construction industry."The Construction industry is booming here and tradesmen have the highest wages
