There would have been no difference. Why? Because the politicians were never going to allow victory. Never.

And YES, sure we could have won. If we could go from jungle to jungle in the Pacific and defeat the Japanese - who were a far better military than the Vietnamese by the way - over and over and over, island after island, then we could have beat the hell out of the sorry ass Vietnamese.

But we would have had to take the bastards right up to the Chinese border and kill them all, and the politicians had fears of the ghosts of Korea and a Chinese intervention, or Soviet too. Those fears choked them and choked the war effort.

So, since we never planned on winning, the only other outcome is losing. And yes, I know the third possibility is a Korea-like stalemate, but I don't believe that sort of lightning will ever strike twice. That situation is unique.
