slavery would have gone away on its own as mechanization was about to make large labor pools obsolete.   but there would have been no war to claim nearly 600k lives and 40% of the economy.   isn't it strange that the rest of the world got over slavery without bloodshed ?  much of it before Lincoln ?  But Lincoln needed the war.
