This is today's Israel under Benjamin Netanyahu..

Religious fundamentalism has become a problem with our supposedly "good friend" too.

JERUSALEM — Two women serve in Israel's new Cabinet, but some Israelis would rather not see them.

Newspapers aimed at ultra-Orthodox Jewish readers tampered with the inaugural photograph of the Cabinet, erasing ministers Limor Livnat and Sofa Landver.

Ultra-Orthodox newspapers consider it immodest to print images of women.

The daily Yated Neeman digitally changed the photo, moving two male ministers into the places formerly occupied by the women.

The weekly Shaa Tova simply blacked the women out, in a photo reprinted Friday by the mainstream daily Maariv.

No response was available from the two papers.

During the election, campaign posters featuring female candidate Tzipi Livni were defaced near ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods.

The ultra orthodox is about 20 percent of Israel. They are …. Different to say the least.

The Chabad-Lubavitch movement makes up most of the ultra orthodox in Israel or well really anyplace. They throw rocks at other Jews on Shabbat if they see they are not observing Shabbat. They do not let their children play with non kosher animal toys in the Noah’s ark toy set. They refuse to use the same plate for cheese that once had lamb on it. It’s different but interesting.

They are a very non tolerant group to any other religion (mostly Christianity) or even other Jews who are just orthodox or conservative or reform or atheistic. They would make such a big stink that I am sure it was easier to remove the women from the picture than to deal with their protest.

A few years ago a Jewish man, Ilan Ramon was picked to go on the space shuttle. He was a secular Jew but out of respect for the ultra orthodox he asked for kosher food. Not many Jews want to be ultra orthodox but the ones who are not rabid atheist's respect them and what they stand for.

Netanyahu caters to these people..without the ultra right wing parties, he wouldn't have been in a position to broker a deal making him the PM.

Anyway, it sounds to me like they stand for misogyny. What's their problem with women? And isn't this similar, though admittedly not quite as extreme, as the way Islam looks upon women?

In fact, come to think of it, the Christian fundies don't exactly respect women's rights either...a woman should submit to her husband and all that BS.

Religion is a drag when it's taken to extremes.
