Everyone knows you're going to get hit with a hefty tax bill when you go on "The Price Is Right" and win a Corvette, a living room set and a trip to Aruba.

Same goes for the cash you take home after playing hangman with Pat Sajak and Vanna White on "Wheel of Fortune."

But getting issued a 1099 form and taking a $237 tax hit after winning over 300 coupons for free donuts and coffee on fan appreciation day at a Houston Astros game?

Yet that — and presumably thousands of empty hidden calories — were the hidden costs for Bob Choate. As the Houston Chronicle reports, the Astros fan thought he had hit a jelly-filled jackpot when he won 315 coupons for a free coffee and doughnut at Shipley Do-Nuts last season. But the prize was estimated by the team and chain to be worth $927.61 — or about $3 a coupon. And that led to them requiring a 1099 tax form to be issued because it was above the $600 threshold.

Thats right "" THERES NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH!"" Well Democrats dont preach that when it comes to free school lunch programs they have. Remember Nancy Pelosi said the Republicans want to stave your children because Newt Gingrich wanted to abolish the School lunch program? Well texas isnt a free friendly low tax state after all. IM GLAD IM AN ORIOLES FAN! Cause last Year i won an Orioles Game jersey worn off the players back! And State of Maryland didnt charge me a measley dime for it. If your a really sports fan YOU MOVE TO BALTIMORE! Why? Cause when you win prizes in Baltimore you dont pay taxes on prizes. Just like every wonder why Hollywood wants to shoot movies in Canada than in California? Why?? Because Taxes are higher to shoot movies in California than in Canada. So If youre a texan then call your local U HAUL or Mayflower moving company and Move to Baltimore. Then you can become an O's season Ticket Holder and win prizes and,,, PAY NO TAXES ON IT!!

I would thnk that even a bad lawyer would argue that the coupons were not worth anything until after they were redeemed.

BUt it does show how ridiculous some things get.

does your paycheck have no value till you cash it? its value is still the same, its usefulness is just not as much.

Plus how exactly do you expect the IRS to monitor his use of the coupons?

If I win a car do I not pay taxes till I use it aka drive it? He owned the coupons they have value..therefor he had value...that he chooses not to use them is not the fault of anyone.

Funny thing is, in Canada there is no tax on contest winnings.

Time to move to the great North, eh hosers?

fact is is they said say...no taxes on lotto winnings...the winnings from the lotto ...would just be alot smaller then since thats taken into account. Also it would leave open a nice tax loophole...the CEO did not get 10,000 shares of stock for payment...he "won" them

Paychecks don't usually come with statements that they have no cash value.

Nothing free is good usually!!

I hope the guy tries to get out of that somehow!!

UNREAL.........

Good.

But the right solution was for the government ro realize that they were the ones being ridiculous and to not charge the tax.

why not? what about if you win the latto, or at the Casino, or win a new car..you have to pay taxes...I think under 600 bucks is a fair amount to not pay taxes on winnings. Fact is it would just be a huge loophole if we let all winnings go tax free.

This is a typical response from a liberal.

Everything we earn or win or profit from should be taxed, and if possible it should be taxed multiple times.

In fact, the liberals look on the whole taxation process as a gift. They believe that whatever we all have left over after we pay our taxes is a GIFT from the government.

We should all be thankful that we are able to keep at least some of our assets.
