don't know if its still this way but in Korea you ate what your family could manage to bring you.  repeat offenders were quite rare.  in Germany they would feed you but stayed in your cell for all but about an hour a week and far more spartan than the image postedand if you spoiled the mat on the block shelf that was a bed no more mat for you.  BUT when you had served your time, the slate was actually wiped clean and you could have a true fresh start.  again no repeat offenders.
