In the 2008 presidential election one state, and only one state, registered a Republican win in every single county. That was Oklahoma. All 77 counties were decisive wins for John McCain. Today Oklahoma is back in the news. News from the reddest state in America....

OKLAHOMA CITY - Only one in four public high school students can name the first President of the United States, according to a survey released today. The survey was commissioned by the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs in observance of Constitution Day on Thursday. The Oklahoma City-based think tank enlisted national research firm, Strategic Vision, to access students' basic civic knowledge. OCPA commissioned a national research firm, Strategic Vision, to determine Oklahoma public high-school students' level of basic civic knowledge.

Students were given 10 questions drawn from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services item bank. Candidates for U.S. citizenship must answer six questions correctly in order to become citizens. About 92% of the people who take the citizenship test pass on their first try, according to immigration service data. However, Oklahoma students did not fare as well. Only about 3% of the students surveyed would have passed the citizenship test.

Last week I wrote an op-ed piece that said in part...

There is nothing "grand" remaining about the Grand Old Party. Once a viable national political force, they have now sunk to a reduced base of mainly predominantly white, under-educated, fringe radicals, residing in a few southern regressive states. They did it to themselves, and their leaders seem powerless, or unwilling to reverse the trend. Actually they no longer have national "leaders", just individuals more recognizable than others. In place of leaders they just revel in the wisdom of their stars like Joe The Plumber, Sarah Palin, who couldn't even finish one term as governor, and radio hate mongers.

A large part of the Republican base calls themselves the "religious right", and they're equally unhinged. When the President visited Phoenix on August 17th, local minister Steven Anderson of the Faithful World Baptist Church, who strongly expresses hatred for Obama in many of his sermons, told his congretation that he wished him dead. Later it was discovered that Chris Broughton, the man who brought an AR-15 assault rifle to the Phoenix town hall meeting where Obama spoke, had attended Anderson's sermon. In a later interview, Broughton said he concurred with his pastor's wish to see Obama "die and go to hell."

They've convinced themselves that the President isn't even a citizen. He's a socialist. He's a Nazi. He's the anti-Christ. They have more conspiracy theories than the National Enquirer. It's as if they've become the party of Sasquatch hunters and UFO spotters. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=lPwGV1h4lW8

I rest my case.

Gee.....what're the chances there was a high number, of these students, kept at home....to avoid the evils of Obama's "Welcome back to school!"-presentation?

Actually, it wasn't "chances", it was certainties. Many of the legislators in Oklahoma City strongly encouraged just that.

I'm guessin' their answer for first President ranged from Jefferson Davis to Jerry Falwell perhaps?;)

But never mind that... the Radical Right has "Think Tanks" to indoctrinate their kids on what they need to know...

And what would you do with these "Americans", being such a good American yourself? deny them rights?

BTW. As of 2007, HALF of ALL young Americans couldn't find New York on the map, but then I suspect they don't even know who their daddy is, so why should they care about New York or Washington? I'd love to hear you say that they are of course all rightwingers, and the situation has improved or will, under Obama.

If you were really interested in the betterment of America instead of thinking that you know anything about peoples lives outside of your own intolerant world, you might be more concerned about what EVERYONE is being taught or not taught in school.

Once again. The Republican party is shrinking, as it should. The Libertarian party is growing, and they aren't stupid. Ever wonder how many Libertarians are highly educated as opposed to democrats? Even those who can speak English? Your true enemy is waiting quietly to play their hand at election time. You buffoons are playing your empty hand now, providing ammunition.

Is there any indication that any of these children who took this test are actually Republicans, or is this just being inserted in because Oklahoma votes Republican in national elections?

In most cases the Federal government works with the state to establish the education guidelines as I understand. I find it somewhat misleading that you fail to indicate that the Governor of Oklahoma is in fact a Democrat, or offer any evidence that these children taking this test are in fact Republicans.

That said, if kids really do not know the answers to these questions, they are just complete idiots.

I think this thread says a whole lot more about the poor excuse of public education than it does about anything else. Teachers unions have ruined the public education system if it ever was good to start with. A system that is run almost totally by democrats and liberals.

I would not be laughing at the idiot students if you dont want take credit for the idiot democrats in charge of teaching them.

"A system that is run almost totally by democrats and liberals."

Now how stupid is that remark? Quite stupid actually. Do you think Oklahoma imports in "democrats and liberals" to run the school system?

Better go back to the drawing board to find a way to bash Democrats. That moonbattery logic makes you look quite foolish.

The school system in general are run by democrats and unions run by democrats.

are you under the impression there are no democrats in Oklahoma?

Would you agree its those "evil" republicans who are trying to get charter schools going? I know it is in my state and every other state I know of and its the school districts (run by democrats) who fight it every step of the way.

http://www.publiccharters.org/node/887

above is a story about how the Oklahoma public school system lost a battle to stop charter schools.

Now if the schools were run by repubicans why would they fight themselves to end something they fight for in the first place?

Nope that's why I never made the claim. Now you're qualifying your absurd claim by stating, "The school system in general are run by democrats and unions run by democrats."

Between 1990 and 2008, ninety-three percent of donations made by National Education Association political action committees and individual officers went to Democrats,

As for the unions, I think it would be foolish to suggest that they are not a more useful tool to the Democratic party in terms of monetary contributions than the Republican. Various sites support that, but I won't state it as fact since the goompahs on this board will balk at sites when the site doesn't support their view, yet surprisingly support it, when it does. Unions are most likely a fading entity anyway.

You might do some research before opening your mouth.

I will say it again,

the PUBLIC school system in general is run by democrats and the school district unions are run by democrats even on a higher level.
