Pre-1967, Israel had a stretch where it was 9 miles wide - about 1/3 of the way across new york city at its longest stretch, and facing what was then the superbly equipped (by the soviet union) Syrian army.  The pre-1967 borders couldn't be defended, and demanding a return to them would mean one and only one thing - the destruction of israel.
