WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is considering sending large numbers of additional U.S. forces to Afghanistan next year but fewer than preferred by his war commander, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, U.S. officials said.
Such a narrowed military mission would escalate American forces to accomplish the commander's broadest goals, protecting Afghan cities and key infrastructure. But the option's scaled-down troop numbers likely would cut back on McChrystal's most ambitious objectives, amounting to what one official described as "McChrystal Light."
Under the pared-down option, McChrystal would be given fewer forces than the 40,000 additional troops he has asked for atop the current U.S. force of 68,000, officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

Senior White House officials stressed, however, that the president has not settled on any new troop numbers and continues to debate other strategic approaches to the 8-year-old Afghanistan war. The officials say Obama has not yet firmly settled on the narrowed option or any other as his final choice for how to overhaul the war effort.
The president saw the impact of the war firsthand early Thursday, flying to a military air base near Washington where he silently viewed the return of the remains of 18 Americans who died recently in Afghanistan. He later said the middle-of-the-night visit was "a sobering reminder" of the sacrifices of war.

And as for that trip to Dover that our newly elected president took...G.W.B. never did make an appearance there EVER. But he sure could put on the 'DOG & PONY' show in front of the grieving families and have a REAL MEDIA moment :mad:

I for one, am glad that this President isn't being pushed around by a VP to make critical decisions about the numbers of human lives to are to be sent over there...he is doing the right thing and listening to ALL of his advisers in & out of the military field and there are a plethora of opinions on what & how many service people to send!!! DITHERING INDEED!!!

According to Keynesian economics ( the model the president subscribes to) any spending is stimulative. So spending on the military would stimulate the economy just as much as spending on new roads. Obviously cost is not the reason to not send troops. (I would point out that breaking windows all over town just so that they could be fixed would not be stimulative)

Just like Bush this president knows that the war dead will be counted and he will be blamed (of course f P. Bush knew there would be a daily segment on every news channel and P Obama knows it will be glossed over). Setting aside desires to win the war, he needs to send in enough troops to protect the ones that are there but not so many that the amount of them that get killed goes up.

But if he wants to win the war then he should do what his general says.

Excellent analogy...
But I like this one too: lets recount; start 2 aggressive actions under 'FALSE PRETENSES', getting us into DEBIT WITH A COMMUNIST COUNTRY {to the tune of 60 billion and counting...who knows the interest rate???} but MISSION ACCOMPLISHED {6 years ago} and we are still spending above and beyond our means for military funding {just because we are there doesn't mean that we can afford it}

But if he wants to win the war then he should do what his general says.
WHICH GENERAL...who is more qualified to have the #1 best known piece of advice to listen too...seems that they are a varied as the seasons over there!

What WIN:confused: The war on Terrorism...you'd have better luck coming up with a holistic way to rid the world of 'COCKROACHES' then ridding these areas of Terrorists!!! Or did you mean the WAR ON DRUGS that is ramped in this country of Afghanistan...because we have accomplished such a good model of success right here in our own backyard so we should be the beacon of light to all other countries for the 'BOOK ON HOW TO'...is my heavy sarcasm showing :rolleyes:

Our fascist president , with thoughtful consideration , put on his basketball shoes and went to the court, He needed to SHOOT HOOPS to FORGET HIS DYING TROOPS! After a few hours he tired of that and went to hit balls from a SAND TRAP. Oh , how our mindless one can find so many ways to have his fun . Well, time has come for him to lie on T.V. about our great economy.
He will brag about a 3.5 GDP that was created by giving taxpayers money away, you see. The very next day the MARKETS WOKE UP! and his lies were exposed like an empty cup. If it was not so serious This clown would be a JOKE, that is what one receives when you buy a PIG in a POKE! SOME PIG, talkes a HUGE POKE! GOOD LUCK AMERICA!
