Senate Republicans are making a big mistake not putting in an amendment to the ICE and Border Patrol Funding Reconciliation bill that blocks this $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund. Relying on Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche's representations that the DOJ is not going forward with the fund is incredibly foolish behavior because the matter involves something President Donald Trump really cares about. This $1.8 billion fund will be like President Trump's policy plan to use tariffs to eventually replace part of the income tax almost everyone thinks it is a bad idea but he keeps pushing forward. President Trump does not care that it is completely unethical and a glaring display of complete corruption he believes his MAGA base will love him for it because he is helping the January 6 protesters that were sent to jail!
At minimum Senate Republicans should put in an amendment that stops the over-the-top corruption in such a fund; specifically it should do the following. It should ban claimants that caused significant bodily injury to a Capitol or D.C. police officer on January 6 from receiving compensation. It should have the five members on the governing board have to be confirmed by the Senate and mandate that the President can only remove a member of the board for major malfeasance by that board member. Compensation should be limited as follows: legal expenses and health care expenses are permitted but other than that the loss covered is loss of income meanings earnings/business losses and such are limited to $1 million dollars. Lastly, Donald Trump and his family are not to permitted to have a claim approved by the fund.
If Congress does not stop this $1.8 billion fund from being created and implemented it will go through this is a vintage Donald Trump move being in power for Donald Trump means you get to help your friends and allies, the country's interest be damned! Donald Trump loves to be idolized and the January 6 protesters will love Donald Trump over the compensation they receive and will be effusive about their appreciation and the good thing that happened here and Donald Trump will eat that up! If this fund goes through as originally outlined it will go down in history as a "beyond the pale" slush fund that the President used to reward his political allies and those he liked. If Republicans don't stop Donald Trump here and this corruption scheme goes thru as proposed quite a significant number of Republican members of Congress will lose reelection over this, the American people aren' t a bunch of idiots!
