Religious conservatives have had their panties in a bunch for decades over the fact that the
supreme court outlawed prayer in schools 50 years ago.
They make all sorts of idiotic claims about how morality has declined in America because of this, and drugs and sexual promiscuity are so common among kids because of this and how the quality
of education has declined drastically because of this, which is absolute hooey .
The very definite problems of our schools are due to entirely different reasons and too complex
to discuss here .
However, if the supreme court were to allow school prayer again, it would be opening up a can of worms,to say the least . America is now one of the most religiously diverse ocuntries in the world;
although the majority of Americans are Christian, at least nominally, there are now millions of
people who adhere to Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Wicca, Baha'i and many other
lesser known faiths, as well as millions of atheists and agnostics .
Religious ocnservatives want CHRISTIAN prayer in schools, and many also want compulsory
Bible readings every school day . What about stuidents whose parents are not Christian?
Should their children have to be subject to CHRISTIAN prayer ? And Bible readings ?
If prayer is to be restored to our schools, shouldn't they also have Jewish,Muslim,Hindu and Buddhist prayer, or even daily affirmations of the non-existence of God for kids who are old enough to think for themselves and have decided that they are atheists ?
Remember- schools are places for TEACHING, not preaching . Kids from Christian homes can prayer all they want in church or at home .
In the past, when school prayer was the norm, it was not uncommon for kids who were from non-christian homes to be belittled and humiliated by teachers and other kids for not being Christian; there are plenty or horror stories about this.
And just a couple of years ago, some kids from an atheist family in one southern school district who declared themselves to be atheists were harassed viciously by teachers and other kids, and even their parents ! They were called horrible names and even threatened with physical violence ! If prayer is allowed again, you can be absolutely sure that incidents like this will start to become much more common , and it won't be pretty !
Whne I was growing up on Long Island and going to school in the 1960s, the lack of school prayer was not a problem in the least. Things were very different back then. We kids did not wear our religion on our sleeves, and really didn't care what religion other kids or our tewachers followed. We all just minded our own business . It was a live and let live world .
Why can't our schools be more like this today ?

What happened in the United States in the years following the banning of prayer and Bible reading from public schools?

These are just some of the statistics covering "us", the students.
*Pregnancies in Teen Aged Girls - By 1994 had gone up 400%-Highest rate of teen aged motherhood in the West.
*Sexually Transmitted Diseases - Cases of gonorrhea up almost 400% among students age 10 to 14.
*Two Thirds of teenage boys say they've had sex. By the time they are 18 they've had on average, 5 partners.
*Rapes committed by 13-14 year old boys increased 186%.

These are statistics about the parents.
*Divorce rates - up 120%
*Single parent families - up 140%

What about the teachers?
*SAT scores declined sharply
*American students often place last in international scholastic competitions
* When attention focused on teachers to find the reasons for students' failure, many teachers failed certification tests.
*Dramatic increase in school violence
*Student suicides up 253%
*Students lack basic information - poor skills - bad for the business community
*Military forced to provide remedial education for recruits

Our Country
*Between 1962 and 1993 violent crime in the US increased 660%
*Alcohol use increased dramatically
*National productivity decreased
*Drug use
*Illiteracy
*72 million adults functionally illiterate
*26 million can't read at all

The founding fathers knew that these kinds of problems are controlled by the heart. When you take religion and morality away, you have taken away the restraints and the training of the heart. The heart does not respond to laws and laws cannot stop these kinds of things. All of the groups mentioned in that prayer, the students, teachers, parents, and our country, have paid dearly since 1962.

Statistics are from the Department of Justice, The College Entrance Exam Board, Department of Health and Human Resources, Department of Commerce, the Census Bureau and other official sources.

These things are NOT the result of lack of school prayer. The causes are very complex . And restoring school prayer
will do zip, nada, zilch, rien , nichts, , bupkis to improve schools .

Really? I wonder what the stats are for kids who grew up going to Christian schools. Think they are the same?

I think theyre should be limits..Like Its ok to pray during sporting events and before meals at your time. But you cannot pray when in class. No religion period! That includes islam too!

You don't offer any evidence to directly link any of these things to school prayer being removed -- one can just as easily point to anything prior this event and claim all of this was the result.

I'd say tit for tat as Rich offers no evidence to support his opinion either.
