Its economically depressed and socially . . run by idiots . the nation is poverty stricken .
The nation has great resources yet the government and people waste them.

Russia has very low ( 300 billion - 18% about a month's gas energy receipts ) federal debt as opposed to the crippling
30 trillion racked up by the egregious US government in it's endless unsuccessful wars over the last 70 years.

Depends on what country you use for comparison. Romania, Albania, Serbia, Belarus and yes Ukraine are like Russia. Russia's economy does not compare to Germany or Sweden and Switzerland is at a whole other level.
