Judge sentenced in 'kids for cash' case

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — A longtime northeastern Pennsylvania judge was ordered to spend nearly three decades in prison for his role in a massive juvenile justice bribery scandal that prompted the state's high court to toss thousands of convictions.

Former Luzerne County Judge Mark Ciavarella Jr. was sentenced Thursday to 28 years in federal prison for taking $1 million in bribes from the builder of a pair of juvenile detention centers in a case that became known as "kids for cash."

There was a mom on CNN a few minutes ago blaming this case for her son's suicide.

they talked about this in the Michael Moore movie Capitalism, I love story.

Thus why you don't want the Free market to do everything...if I believed the Death penalty I would say shoot the guy.

Yes, this is a good (and very sad!) exemple of why "private enterprise" is not always the solution to all our problems!

Prisons are big business. . .if they were not, there wouldn't be so many prisoners!.

And yet the reaction of most Americans, left and right, to every problem that comes up is "Lock 'em up!"

We look for no other solutions besides prison.

which could be the reason why we have more prisoners per capita than any other nation in the world.

I did not see the MM movie but the fact that he showcased this probably means that the coverage was biased and not really about free markets.

In fact the article linked in the OP says that the bribes were given by the builder of the centers not by the operators yet some on this thread are blaming the free market system when one builder is to blame and the only other person to blame is a gov representative.

Some here seem to think that the judge got money from the prison operators in exchange for locking up kids that were innocent. Yet the article clearly says that the prison operators were forced to cooperate by the judge - they were victims. Some here are saying that the prisons are too crowded due to capitalism yet apparently the judge had to make up convictions in order to fill the centers - again it s the gov representative who is at fault according to the article in the OP.

Only one entity from the private sector is at fault here according to the story and that is the builder who was only able to do wrong because of the cooperation of one gov rep. I highly doubt anyone should be making a case for or against capitalism or for or against gov based on the actions of two people.

Prisons are over crowded because it is BIG industry! Not just the prison itself, but the whole food services, laundry services, etc...

The basis of capitalism is that, if one can make an extra dollars, one will do almost anything, and that it is acceptable under the "God of Capitalism!"

Can't you at least recognize when capitalism lead to excess that are destructive to society?

I can recognize a totally unsubstantiated claim. I can recognize that the claim runs counter to at least a half a dozen facts. I can recognize that your statement is a complete misunderstanding of capitalism and instead is quite a warped view.

Would you do almost anything to make a dollar? If not then your generalization is false but if yes then we understand why you can state such nonsense.

I am not a capitalist.

So, the Judge who just got sent to jail didn't really get money from the owner and builder of the jail? Or are you just saying that the builder of the jail and owner of the jail just were so afraid of the judge that they just decided to give him the money . . .just because he asked for it?

I would be interested in knowing what are the half dozen facts that show that the kids were not placed in those jails for minor offenses, and that the judge (not only this one, by the way) received money in exchange of sending these kids to jail.

Bias and not about free markets? He never said it was about free markets...it was about Capitalism in the US how it really happens, not your pie in the sky ideals about it. Judge takes money from company that builds jail...judge sends tons of kids to said jail where jail bills state and rakes in cash..kids have often just a few min to even plead there case...Kids are kept in jail longer then said..with no review outside the ones who are paid to keep them there ( we decided when we will stop getting paid for you) Company makes huge amounts of money...Judge makes large amounts....kids have lives destroyed...because the current republican idea of goverment is to privatize and not have any oversight. That is how this happens...Republicans and yes some Dems...have let companies buy America in every shape and form in the name of greed. They don't really want free markets...they want markets rigged in there favor.
