Taiwan, formally known as the Republic of China is located just 100 miles off the coast of mainland China. It is a small island nation of approximately 23,000,000 people. It is the one of the last areas of traditional China that is not under "communism." However the PRC (People's Republic of China) claims Taiwan as a sovereign territory of greater China and suggests that it is an administrative district. Many that inhabit Taiwan are mainland refuges who escaped Mao Zedong's People's Liberation Army during the Chinese Civil War in 1949. Since then "Chinese Nationalism" has merely existed only on this small Island. Headed by Chiang Kai-shek, the Chinese Nationalist party known as the Kuomintang ruled over Taiwan for 51 years under martial law until the year 2000 when President Chen Shui-bian of the Democratic Progressive Party was elected to lead Taiwan. Because of his less aggressive liberal party in power, talks of independence are being mentioned. For a long while many Taiwanese citizens have favored an independent nation free of Chinese bullying, the fundamental complication with an independence movement is increased hostility of the PRC. Mainland China has expressed publicly that they will peruse military action if Taiwan furthers its independence movement, which brings us to a tragic climax. So why is this wroth a posting? Because of the United States' shameful involvement in this matter! Currently the diplomatic relations with the U.S. and Taiwan are virtually nonexistent. The U.S. stopped diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979 because the "communist" Chinese wanted us to! Being the money-loving-betraying-ethics-for-profit capitalist's that we are, we began relations with mainland China because our "entrepreneurs" saw that Taiwan was economically weak and China was economically strong. Today China is one of the most unethical countries in the world; it has numerously failed to offer natural rights to its citizens including human rights and freedom of thought. And yet, the United States is willing to bend over backward to cater for a country that contradicts every constitutional right given to a U.S. citizen while a model democracy is being neglected and ignored. And it is all so simple! The reason why the U.S. cut off relations with Taiwan and began relations with China is because we are afraid. China is on the verge of passing us as a world power. We've seen through time the Cold War as a success of capitalism and the destruction of communism. If that is true, then why are we voluntarily making China stronger while a prosperous nation like Taiwan is being neglected?

Mao killed 20 million Chinese during the Great Leap Forward, and then unleashed his rabid dogs -- the Red Guards -- against Chinese society at large to save his flabby butt. Down with Mao. Down with Marx. Down with Lenin.

I love it, you use the term "worship" to bring up negative connotations, when you could have just said "follow". You seem to be using as much subtle propaganda as the stereotypical communist.

"The reason why the U.S. cut off relations with Taiwan and began relations with China is because we are afraid"

Don't be so strict, the reason is economy

The US has no respect for democracy.

It is continually trying to undermine the democratically elected and popular government of Venezuela.

It refuses to recognise Hezbollah even though it was democratically elected in Palestine

Check out Bush's first 'election victory'.

It continually tries to undermine the democratically elected and popular Government in Cuba

I could go on with this list for a long time.

The ROC was abandoned by Jimmy Carter, and he recognized instead the PRC, one of his many infamous and stupid actions in the area of foreign policy. Up until then, successive US democrat and republican administrations had required the PRC to promise never to try to take over the ROC by force as a price for recognition. Carter just tossed this away, and got in return for recognizing the PRC - NOTHING. Even the PRC was stunned at this unnecessary pointless unilateral surrender. You are right - the whole world including the US which hypocritically criticizes places like zimbabwe has nothing to say about the PRC, probably the most murderous dictatorship which has ever existed, even surpassing the soviet union.

Economy should be taken into consideration first. That's a nice move I guess.

We have a law that says we will protect Taiwan, we also have a nuclear extended deterrent to Taiwan, which is the reason that China has no overrun them already.

Taiwan is not forgotten at all. It s a small democratic nation with around 23 million people. People are more prosperous in Taiwan than in Mainland China.

I believe the Chinese robbers see Taiwan's prosperity and that is why they want to steal it for themselves, just like Saddam saw the riches of Kuwait and tried to steal them for himself.

Free nations tend to be more prosperous than nations ruled by leftist Marxist totalitarian fascists.

Taiwan was not always free, It was a rather brutal dictatorship until Chaing Kai Shek died. The people of Taiwan, a diverse group, freed themselves.

The Chinese Communists are not Fascists. China is not a terribly oppressive place for most of its citizens. Certainly North Korea, Myanmar, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Haiti, Cuba, Somalia, the DRC, Eritrea and Syria are worse places to live.
