There would be someone who knows this but it's worth remembering.
When the catholic church commenced the process of beatifying Mother Theresa, certain hoops have to be jumped through. It has since been abolished but one was devil's advocate at the proceedings.
That involves criticising the proposed saint.
On this occasion Hitchens was asked to do the honours. In the past he had been scathing of Agnes and no doubt the Vatican wanted reasons.
He without doubt, let her have it both barrels. Accompanied by bishops and accessory godbotherers, his details were duly noted and we're not accepted with gratitude, as one might expect.
Nonetheless, he was thanked for his participation and heard no more about it.
The point of this as Hitchens realised, that he was the only atheist ever to represent the devil pro bono. Quite a feat indeed.
