On the Al Qaeda note,   I don't think they are or have ever been a structurally sound organization.    They've been scattered since day one.   Multiple cells independent under the same banner.   It's like LA street gangs,  you have 100 different crips gangs,  sometimes they even fight each other,  they just have the same colors and name,  but by no means are the same.    AL-Q existed,  still does,  but it isn't the big bad monster people seem to thing with the terror buzz created anytime it is mentioned on tv.
