I think that part of the reason is that the god they worship demanded the death of an innocent person to ransom the guilty people here on Earth.  Few people consciously realize what a terrible Christian the Christian god is, He's not going to be turning the other cheek or returning good for evil, He's an angry and vengeful god who says right in His holy book that people should fear Him.  He bombs whole cities and kills even the children and animals, He ordered His people to commit genocide, He said that women could be taken as spoils of war, that it was alright to kidnap and rape women and murder their babies.  This is not a nice guy, so it's no wonder that Christians are pretty confused and can resort to violence without the qualms of conscience.

Of course, all that stuff is in the Bible, but the Bible may just be littered with blasphemous nonsense put there by nomadic goatherders guys and other men giving them license to do what they like doing too.  Personally, I have a higher opinion of God than one would get from a close reading of the Bible.
