Concord bans sale of plastic water bottles

CONCORD -- Residents of the historic Massachusetts town of Concord have voted to ban the sale of single-serve plastic water bottles at local stores.

The ban on sales of bottles of a liter or less passed at Wednesday’s town meeting 403-364.

Supporters say it’s the most sweeping water bottle ban passed by any municipality in the nation and will cut down on pollution and limit exposure to toxic chemicals.

Opponents say singling out one form of plastic is ridiculous and the ban will harm local businesses. Opponents also point out that recycled plastic bottles can be used to make dozens of useful items.

Stores could be fined up to $50 for violating the ban.

The ban is scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, pending approval from the state attorney general’s office.

I thought that the reason people STARTED to buy water in small plastic bottles was to cut down on pollution and limit exposure to toxic chemicals???

I clearly remember the screams from years ago, of people insisting that our tap water was loaded with minerals, chemicals, pollutants, you name it, and this was the SOLE reason why the water-in-small-plastic-bottles industry got started and grew to the size it is today.

Now they're BANNING water in small plastic bottles because it forms too many pollutants, toxic chemicals, .........

I never buy them. I hate those bottles. I can even taste the plastic that leaches into the water, and I suspect that bottled water is probably nothing more than filtered tap water.

My grandparents used to have a well on their farm in KS. As a kid, I loved the taste of their water.

Remember they made the 55MPH speed limit they said its designed to save gas,,Then now it save lives.Back then Smoking laws have changed in 1970s its required to put warning labels on package,,Now they say you cant smoke in resterants,,Bars,,Bowling Alleys or in any other public places. Then they made strict laws on TV like you cant say any sex words or use profanity on TV. This is what happening now

well it used to be a matter of good taste/manners. now that manners and taste are two more dinosaurs its just fodder to keep people from paying attention to the real problems we're facing and ignoring..

Like you cant fire a teacher because she makes porn movies on her own time. In the Old days that would be the grounds to fire somebody..Nowadays thats illegal she can sue the principal and the school admin. Just like a Cowboys Cheerleader sued Jerry Jones because she was fired for appearing on Penthouse.
