I think the Han Chinese have occupied most of China for all or recorded history. The First Emperor to rule most of China was Qin Shi Huang, who ruled between 259 and 210 BC. The empire collapsed four years after his death. The point is that the Great Wall of China was perhaps effective for a while, but eventually it did not prevent invasion from non-Han people from the north.
