When the Jews returned to Palestine in the late 1800's they were far from rich. What they had was a dream, and the ability to work. Obviously the Arabs didn't, or they would have drained the swamps long before the Jews arrived. Setting that aside, there has been a Jewish presence in the Land of Palestine, different from what is now called "Palestine", for over 4000 years.
