Conservatives claim that liberalism is not the same as 'classical liberalism', and that they are the modern liberals, not Conservatives at all. Rousseau might not find that true! In his day "Royalists' were the true Conservatives.

Do we all have to wear colored shirts, so we can tell one side from the other? We know who we don't like, but can we define in any sold terms, why?

Now that might work...but the other side {religious zealots} can't discuss anything without setting perimeters of: if they don't bend, if they don't come over to our way of thinking, if I can't brow beat them enough with my superior intelligence then they are deemed ignorant and then the pressure turns to insults and then the 'BROWN SHIRTS' become puffed up with their self importance and the childish games began. Superiority of ignorance allows the self absorbed to apply pressure upon those that don't follow and that annoys the anointed ones GREATLY

Yes. Why do we feel compelled to vilify the opposition, to paint them as the obstacle between ourselves and the good life? This country matured because of political diversity. Now it sounds as if people would be happier if the opposition volunteered to walk off a cliff... and if people aren't willing to step forward, they'd be happy to lend a push. If either side totally had their way, the country would be worse off for it. Political give-and-take is healthier for everybody. I hope people haven't lost sight of that.

When you want to argue, you label.

That entirely depends upon the label and the circumstances. For instance, there was a person posting here that was trying to claim the mantle of Conservative and ascribing to "True Conservatism" many traits that Conservatives do not agree with or even recognize as being part of the Conservative ideology.

I suggested that the traits he described as being Conservative were actually a better fit with the Christian Democrat ideology. He didn't take too kindly to that suggestion.

An argument ensued but it was based on applying accurate terminology to specific ideological traits. We were not calling each other fascists in a petty exchange of pointless ad hominems, we were discussing a legitimate concern over accurately defining the traits of an ideology.

When you want to discuss issues, labels are not important.

That is when labels are most important. Labels do serve a vital function when properly applied to correctly describe the contents of an ideology. It's when they are misapplied that they become nothing more than a distraction.

Intentionally mislabeling your own ideology to make it more palatable to others is fraud. Intentionally mislabeling the ideology of someone else to make it sound less palatable is also fraud.

Accidentally mislabeling your own ideology, or that of another, is an act of ignorance.

It takes effort in the form of thought to articulate a position on an issue, to explain it in detail, and defend it against opposing views. It takes zero intellectual effort to hurl insults at people and given the anonymity offered by the internet, forum posters tend to be far less amiable with strangers on the net than they are with strangers in real life.
