What is an American?

Crevecoeur’s famous essay about American Ideals and farmers doesn’t need a definition, nor does Amendment I from the Bill of Rights published in 1791

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

For the above reasons America has become the dream of all; a refuge where oppressed people seek help, security and food.

Democracy was embodied in America and now with the help of president Bush is being spread all over the world.

The following video shows a short scene of America’s democracy in Iraq. Have a look and see if an American should be proud of it!!

We very rarely see anything like that, in our supposed "left wing" media. Bush's war, in Iraq, is nothing to be proud of. If anything, it is one of the more shameful acts in American foreign policy history. The US has lost credibility, both at home, and in the world, thanks to the shameful acts of Bush and his PNAC neocon cohorts.

Hi and welcome, Due to my slow internet connection, streaming video, or downloading a 45mb file is to time consuming. My short attempt at it indicated a 12hour DL time. So I wont be able to watch them, could you or anyone give a rundown of the movie?

That being said, Ill attempt to answer your question about what is an American?
Often times a simple question calls for a simple answer.
An American is someone who lives in America.
One can define what America is in many different ways.
That is the question, what is America?

Typical Republican response.

Typical liberal response. I am sure that you would prefer that those "brown people" still be living under the thumb of your good buddy saddam but you just can't always have your way.

And with regard to those whith whom America has supposedly lost its credibility...would they be those who were doing billions of dollars of "oil for food" business under the table with saddam when they should have been about the business of making sure that he lived up the terms of his surrender so that this war might never have been necessary?

Are those the people who you fear WE have lost credibility with?

Typical Republican response. You don't like what you see, blame the messenger.

Typical liberal partisan response. If you watch the video, it defines Islamic terrorist propaganda.

For starters, it's in Islamic with English subtitles. It sensationalizes war with images of blown up homes and dead civilians, blaming it on the American "crusaders" yet provide zero evidence that it was the American military which caused this destruction.

And in the fashion of all propaganda, it fails to provide any opposing perspectives. And since it is favorable to the Islamic terrorists, it is by definition Islamic terrorist propaganda.

No "supposedly" about it. America has lost credibility throughout the world, friend and foe. Who, but Israel, which has a vested interest in our interference in the Middle East and in our always flowing aid money, supports our actions in Iraq? The UK? Tony Blair (dubbed "Bush's poodle" by the English press) took a, eventually fatal, political hit for his misguided backing.

Billions in the "oil for food business"? The US has more than made up for that, the total, wasted in Iraq, is fast running up towards 500 billion. Here's a counter for you, so you can keep track of your fiscally conservative president and his wasted billions.http://www.nationalpriorities.org/Cost-of-War/Cost-of-War-3.html

thank you for your replies...I see that apolitical debate has risen out of this topic...it's very clear from the video came from above from f16 fighter and it's US the owner of this kind of planes...does it need videos that US forces bombed Iraq with different kinds of bombs...does it need a video showing a US plane throwing bombs over the heads of civilians...the thing is as clear as the sunshine for all the world...any way ur free to believe it or not...u may believe the unsensational Fox news...!!!

Question. When we are fighting an enemy that does not wear a uniform, and hides among the general population, exactly how do you determine whether a civillian has been killed or a combattant? For that matter, how does anyone make the determination?

germany, france, russia? Ho hum. Sorry, but I could care less whether that rat pack respects us or not. They are not worthy of enough respect for me to even care.

Apples and oranges bucky. It is clear that saddam was being tipped off by the three nations listed above with regard to inspections. And it is clear that the three nations above were illegally arming him. Had they been acting as they should (allegedly being world leaders), then this war might not have ever been necessary. Saddam counted on their lack of cooperation in the lead up to the war to be sufficient to keep us from moving on him. Had they been doing their job rather than doing illegal business with saddam, there very likely would not have been a war.

What country is ? Are there any countries that respect the US anymore, except out of fear?

There was going to be a war no matter what. It has been well documented that plans to attack Iraq had been long in the works. Bob Woodward, in his book, "Plan of Attack", writes that there was pressure from advocates of war inside the administration. Vice President Cheney, whom Woodward describes as a "powerful, steamrolling force," led that group and had developed what some of his colleagues felt was a "fever" about removing Saddam by force. Barely 2 months after 9/11, according to Woodward, Bush directed Rumsfield, to begin planning for an attack of Iraq. You know, as well as I, that after 9/11 the invasion was a foregone conclusion. Or perhaps you don't, perhaps you still believe Saddam had WMDs as well.

You are pitifully naive if you believe that among countries there is anything but fear or need. At present, those 3 believe that they have each other and that is all they need. I am confident that they will learn in the not too distant future that socialist nations simply can't be relied on.

By 9/11, there is no doubt that it was well known that france, germany, and russia were supporting saddam for oil, and equally clear, that they were not willing to hold him to the terms of his surrender. Someone was going to have to do it unless, of course, you really did prefer to have saddam in charge. Is that it? Did you really prefer to have him in charge?

Saddam had been flouting UN resolutions for about a decade and a half. I should hope that action had been long planned. Far earlier than 9/11 one would hope.

And of course I believe he had wmd's. And I believe that at some point, russia, france, and germany told him that we were coming to town with, or without them, and that he must get his wmd's out of the country. My money is on them helping saddam move his stockpiles to syria.

Saddam was a fanatic for keeping records. He even recorded the number of bullets used by execution squads and the locations of the bullet wounds on those killed by them. He kept meticulous records of everything. Oddly enough, he had no records on the destruction of wmd that we know for a fact that he had.

We know he had them, and we know that he was a fiend for keeping records, and we know he had no record of destroying them. Where do you suppose they are? Are you naive enough to take him at his word knowing that he was being helped by our alleged allies?

We also know that he had WMDs because he used them.

When ? Are you still on the, "he gassed in own people" kick? That was before the first gulf war. The acquiring and the usage of those chemical weapons was condoned, in fact encouraged, by the US during the Iran-Iraq War. So, blame the Reagan administration.
