If the goal in Afghanistan is to eliminate the Taliban or make it a non-factor in Afghanistan, we have failed, and I'm not sure we can succeed. The people still support the Taliban. I don't think the Taliban can defeat, or ever will be able to defeat, even a small element of the US armed forces in any pitched battle. So there may be an ugly withdrawal, but only when we decide to do so. Moreover, we're not the only nation with troops there. Officially, even if it is only a sham, we have allies. Getting out will not be simple or pain free.
