First of all, America has only been around for 231 years; so do not get cocky yet.  The Roman Republic lasted 400 years before it evolved into an imperial government; and this was because the consuls (who were their Executives) brought more and more power to themselves through the years.  Sound familiar?

I would say that we do have more effective oversight and checks & balances in our government than the Romans did; however, that still does not mean it is impossible.  To be honest, Bush's recent remarks of "decision-maker" and "decider" have got me a little worried.  What is to say he does not put a stay on the 2008 election because of a yellow-alert terrorist threat?

Something to think about, eh?
