With 60,000 dead, Mexicans wonder why drug war doesn't rate in presidential debate

Much of Latin America was dismayed that they got only a glancing mention in Romney and Obama's final presidential debate.

By Sara Miller Llana | Christian Science Monitor – 10/23/2012

That means no candidate talked about the drug trade, despite historic violence playing out in Mexico, much of it along the 2,000-mile border that the US shares.

Both parties work for the Feds. That's a scandal of the Feds. (D.O.J. committed "Operation Fast and Furious") They dare not touch it.

Mexicans don't vote in our elections.
Moreover, any politician who seriously supported ending the drug war would lose a lot more votes than he would gain.

Which is why the absurd and costly war on drugs has continued as long as it has, and shows no sign of abating.

Drugs--and all high-profit products--will ALWAYS be marketed where the people tolerate it.
Period. End of subject.
Blame no one but yourselves.

Of course. No one is going to sell anything where there is no market.

So, now the real question is, how do we minimize the market for illegal drugs in the USA?

You cannot.
The sooner you stop blaming "others"--the sooner your explosion of murder and violence will end.
You must stop your suppliers.
To end the problems in YOUR country.
Why do some seek to blame users?
Without suppliers--there are no users.

Who is REALLY to blame??--an exercise in futility--makes no sense from any direction.
It is missing the point--blaming others--a dog chasing it's tail.
Easy money creates suppliers--"getting high"--an escape from reality-- creates users.
Both operate on the level of what is called "human nature". Hard to override.

Shut down the border for starters, with shoot to kill orders for those that do get across. Then give anyone selling drugs inside the US the death penalty. They destroy more lives than any serial killer.

so they built a better mousetrap and the world beat a path to their door ? have not heard that take before.

it is hard to not tolerate people who are armed to the teeth and embrace cruelty

This makes no sense.

for one thing, you're responding as if I were a Mexican national.

For another, as long as there is a demand, there will be people willing to fill that demand.

Yes, absolutely, we need to end the problem in my country. The problem is the demand for illegal drugs.

Yes--you are quite right--but--the situation did not develop overnight.
Years and years of corruption and failure to enforce any sort of laws has created a monster. I think only an extremely violent fascist government--willing to round up all at once all those they know are the criminals--and dealing with them in the exact same fashion as the criminals do others--is the only solution.

All tyrants, be they government or criminals, rule by creating fear in others.
The Nazis rolled across Europe this way.
They were just a group of criminals with fancy uniforms and brass bands.
Only a vicious and horrific revulsion of criminals ends their tyranny.
It will NOT be pretty.
And--it is why you cannot ever accept this kind of lawlessness.

The people KNOW who the criminals are.
They KNOW where they live.
They KNOW what they are doing.
They KNOW when they're doing it.
Learn to live with it--or--fight back.

The problem is the demand for illegal drugs.

I suspect most people who try drugs don't think they can get hooked, or that they can quit anytime they want to. If it were that simple, there probably wouldn't be any serious drug use.

On the other hand, what is the purpose of getting people hooked on drugs knowing how destructive they are? Selling drugs isn't like selling food or I-phones.

The purpose of getting people hooked on drugs is so that you can sell them more drugs. That is what the dealers in addictive drugs do, and how they make their money.

A rational approach to reducing drug abuse is what is needed. What isn't needed is that fascist government Johnny Tremain mentioned trying to force everyone to make good choices. That approach has never been shown to work, for one thing, and government is already too big and powerful for another.

The so called "war on drugs" is a failed government program that costs hundreds of billions every year, and does no good. The appetite for drugs remains unchecked. The objective may be a reduction in drug abuse, but the results are overcrowded prisons, violent cartels having a virtual war right on our border, and violent gangs murdering each other in our own country, all for drug money.

An oddity of life--some people can do fairly dangerous drugs--and still work, maintain and control their lives.
Others--cannot. Weird how some do this.
Never smart, though.
A ruse--a game one can play with oneself--with deadly consequences.

I did not recommend this--just saying that this will be the inevitable result--there is no other path.
It will happen.
Or their country will be an agglomeration of insanities that will make the world gasp in horror.
And be utterly and completely unlivable.
Mass graves all over the countryside--is not very civically responsible.
