It's traditional for US presidents to say the future of PR is up to it's inhabitants. Why should that be? PR is a drain on the US and is de facto a foreign country - time to cut 'em loose.

No, they're an economic drain to the US. Why should we sign up for an economic drain? Appeaser nutcases like to throw around the word "imperialist", but this is a remnant of the only actual US imperialist period, in the aftermath of the spanish-american war. When Cuba was a militarily strong soviet proxy, I wouldn't have suggested this - the cubans would have moved in and snapped them up in one gulp. Now that Cuba is just a pathetic backwater, it's time to call on PR to stand on its own two feet.
